To begin with, I like listening to National Geography. It covers news and documentary of animals, environment, and people. Moreover, it's not biased for any specific country's interest. I think what the camera views is quite objective. That's why I prefer listening to National Geography to any other news agency. But there's one thing I don't like about National Geography. It's when I watch animal news. Often times, I watch weaker animals hunted down by stronger animals. Yesterday I watched a baby buffalo killed by a pack of hyena. I try to avoid animal documentary. In general, however, I enjoy watching National Geography.

Rookie Smokejumpers(Environment)
Yesterday I watched this video and jotted down some main points to summerize but I don't have the note now. I tried to listen to the video again, but the computer I'm using now have some problem with playing the vedio. It's on and off, so I can't listen properly.
So I'll bring up yesterday's memory and write. Let me see...Smokejumpers are people who landed down from the sky and put out fires in the middle of mountainous area where it's difficult for normal firefighters to approach. Many of them used to be firefighters. They're regarded as "elite firefighters". Veterans are coming back to be smokejumpers. Surprisingly, even though their job is very dangerous and diffiuclt, the number of applicants is much more than that of the positions. Smokejumpers put a lot of efforts to learn the skills needed to be one. Their practice is very smilar to the real situations. The trainers record trainees' performance in detail and tell them what they should work on to improve the skills.
I think to become a smokejumer requires one to be brave, adventurous, and dedicated. Above all, they hate the devastating consequence the forest fire brings; trees, animals, people will be burned down to ashes unless somebody extinguish the spreading forest fire. I think somejumpers made a great sacrifice for the sake of many forms of living creatures in nature.

Hi Pilsu,

It's really great to see you here in this forum posting your thoughts and comments!

I agree with you: National Geographic is a fantastic channel to watch. I also like the fact that the content is very international and has wonderful variety across topical interest areas.

The animal stories can be a little gruesome to watch sometimes, that's for sure. But I guess that is nature and animals in their true guises, right?

In any case, if you really like the National Geographic stories, I also recommend clicking on the [iView] English Video News link in the web links section to the upper right of this screen. That will take you to video news screens from Reuters, CNN, BBC and lots more - but National Geographic is the default screen that loads up first. The full National Geographic screen is really impressive and gives you access to thousands of video articles of outstanding quality.

Great to see you applying your English skills, Pilsu! Keep up the fantastic work.

Best,

~ Jason

That's a really interesting story, Pilsu. I didn't know about smokejumpers until I read your report... Bushfires are a really big problem in my country (Australia), especially these days with summers getting even longer and hotter than before. However, I didn't hear about smokejumpers being used to fight fires in Australia. Perhaps they should start using them there as well.

I really like the fact that you did this report from memory, a day after you watched the story and took notes. I think that is actually an excellent way to develop your English, because the effort to remember will stimulate more vocabulary and content awareness in English.

This is just a minor thing, but in future I recommend posting your report by first pressing "start a topic". You can add your report to the National Geographic category that way (instead of just a reply to the post showing the video player), and people's responses, comments and questions will be easier to organize with specific reference to that particular story. Just a small recommendation there...

Anyway, I got a lot from your report and enjoyed learning something new - thanks!

~ Jason

I just watched the section of environment, the hurricane. It looks touching people softly not like other huge, furious ones. Some children with adults being around seems happy with it and I would like to join there in case we do have that kind of spiral winds in Korea.
Hi, Pilsu. It'd been two weeks after the last lecture of the spring semester. How are you doing? Almost high schools will be facing the final term exam next week. So a bit busy right now for me but I think you are probably working part time job and studying whatever time you have got. I like you passion for studying and focusing on whatever you like.
The last part in your writing is my point of view as well. I also have that kind of sympathy. So sad, isn't it? However, after all survival is that the nature is all about.
I will see you around.^^

Hi,
I was not sure if I enjoy the National Geographic videos. But I tried and I am really nice suppraised. I found interesting video about the Monterey Bay. Last year I had opportunity to visit in this ocean shore. I fully agree that is unique and should be protect.
From video I learned a lot about animals living in Monterey Bay water. The deepest under water canyon creates conditions to exist wide variety of plants, fishes, mammals and birds.
I was impressed by green water forest with small shrimps.
I will watch more videos from now.

I was watching the National Geographic videoes and I was really amazed by the huge effort and dedicition that those people presented on their search. They tried to convey a very realistic and biased news all around the world.Just sitting there for hours and watching different materials of science and history, and diversity of cultures and people and investigating, and documenting every single information seemed very enjoyable for me if not mesmerizing.I looked upon the global warming and how we could lose that beauitful nature that we  live on and how to help preserving and maintaing the planet with care and raising awarness of that danger that could destroy our planet.I also liked the topic of ancient dianosurs and how scientists could search more and more in Idaho in a very remote areas and the discoveries that they found the oldest 40 millions ago creatures found in that area. Also the nature disaster that existed and that includes Tornadoes and Hurricanes and what is called storms chaser very fascinating how those scientists could capture that amount of scenes and analyze it.I would keep watching and wondering in National Geographic videoes and definitely there would be lots to see and get informed about.
