Introduce yourself...

The best way to get started in a discussion forum is to introduce yourself!

Given that I started the forum, I'll go ahead and introduce myself first...

My name is Jason Renshaw. I'm 35 years old and I come from Melbourne in Australia. I am a graduate of the University of Melbourne (where I did a double major in English and Swedish) and I have been teaching English for almost 16 years.

If you do the math you'll see that I started teaching English when I was 19 - straight out of high school! I started out as a tutor for high school students looking to improve their composition skills, and then later began to teach English as a second or foreign language to university students and business people. I did this as a part-time job for several years while I traveled the world and worked in various industries (hospitality, marketing, tourism, and then later language institute management). For the last 8 years teaching English has been a full time profession for me and I have taught all age groups (kindergarten, elementary/primary, secondary school, university and adults).

In 2007 I had a 20-book series published with Pearson Longman. It's called Boost! and is divided into five strands (reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar), each with four levels. Boost! is now selling well all around the world, so that's really pleasing! You can see the books at this link: http://www.boostskillsseries.com

Currently I am visiting professor at the Teacher's College, English Education Department, at Kyungpook National University in Daegu, South Korea. It's my job to train and develop the next generation of Korean secondary school English teachers. It's very hard work, but also very satisfying. I have some of the best students a teacher could ever wish for, and it gives me a very positive feeling about the future of English teaching in Korea.

I am also a Business English instructor with Pagoda Outsourcing, focusing on teaching English to Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction employees at the main Changwon plant. My students at Doosan are awesome. It's tiring to go and teach at night (and it's tiring for the employees as well!) but after every lesson with the Doosan people I feel very energetic and positive. They are great people, and I'm fortunate to be able to call them my students.

If that's not enough to keep a guy busy, I also run an online English teaching and learning network called www.onlinEnglish.net. I own and run that company with two Canadian guys whom I consider to be some of my closest friends. We're busy with lots of side-projects at the moment, but eventually we're looking forward to pouring more of our energy into that company and making it the best online resource for learning English.

I am married to a Korean national, and we have a little son (three years old) named Jamie/재민. We have another baby on the way, so no doubt life at home is going to get busier and busier! I love my family with all my heart, and always wish I could spend more time with them.

I used to have a variety of personal hobbies, but they've been cut down a lot since I got married and started a family. To be honest, my main hobbies now are my work and my son! I try to do a lot of interesting and innovative things in my work as an English teaching professional, and that helps to make work feel more like a hobby or passion. And with my son, well he's so interested in so many things now (reading books, riding bicycles, drawing pictures, playing with lego, playing golf, cricket and football) that just by playing with him I seem to be doing several hobbies at once! One other thing I like to do these days is to catch up with some friends and play Screen Golf, relaxing with a few cold beers. That's nice!

I started the Global English Discussion forum because I believe in the power of the Internet to really connect people and make language learning more practical, realistic and motivating. I hope you'll join me in making it the very best place on the net to come and apply real English discussion skills.

So there's my self-introduction. Yours doesn't need to be as long as mine (but it can also be longer if you want!), but please do go ahead and let the world know a little about you. Connecting with other people around the world is the best way to facilitate genuine English interaction!

Best of luck to you,

~ Jason

Hello~ Jason and everyone that I know!

It's the first time that I write on this board and I am very appreciated to Mr. Renshaw. I think Jason is the only person who not only understand Korean customs, but teach professionally.
Actually I have considered why I cannot speak English as I want. And as time goes, my confidence is getting lower than I entered Doosan. I have tried the reason why I feel embarrassed when I speek English. And I find the reason.
Reason is the only thing. I didn't practice much! Therefore, this is very good chance to practice English both of speaking and writing. And thank you again to Mr. Renshaw.

Always I hope see you and my friends soon!^^; byebye~

Hello everyone! Special thanks to Jason for setting up this site despite his busy schedule :) My name is Hazel and I come from the beautiful island of Cebu, Philippines. I used to be an ESL teacher but have stopped for a few years now. I am very interested to go back into this field and the first step that I can think of is communicating with people of the same interest.

There are a lot of Korean students out here in Cebu taking English lessons. One day I hope to open my own online English school not only to teach Koreans but also fellow Filipinos as well.

I look forward to chatting with all the members of Jason's global english discussion group!

Hazel :)

Great to have you involved in this forum, teacherhazel.

Your idea for an online English school is similar to my own ambition. However, as much as there are growing crazes for both the Internet and English language, I have to admit starting an online school is not as easy as it sounds... We should compare notes sometime!

Best of luck to you,

~ Jason

Nice to have you with us, Umak.

I see you mention improving your spoken English as a priority, and I also noticed you started posting some responses to TOEFL topics in my linked Chinswing posts. I hope it's helpful to you. My advice is to really utilize Chinswing and not limit yourself to just test preparation posts. There are so many interesting threads and topics in Chinswing, and there are many native speakers participating in them. If you get involved and post as widely as possible, you'll really improve your communication skills!

Good luck,

~ Jason

As I mentioned earlier I had very limited english speaking because i don't often used it when i'm still in my country Philippines...i just recently immigrated in US 2 months ago, and since I dont have any choice but to practice speaking English and writing as well, likewise in preparation for my State board license that requires me to take toefl because I earned the degree in the Philippine so they consider me as foreign graduate. Although I'm afraid with this coming exam (toefl) that's why I spend much of my time to practice it before taking it, so I hope you won't mind if I go writing and speaking in this site...I really appreciated and so thankful that you help everybody, despite of your busy career. From the bottom of my heart I say million thanks to find this forum and more power in your career.

Hi Umak,

I seem to have missed this post, so my apologies for not answering you sooner! It's great to have you here involved with the Global English Discussion Forum. I hope it helps you in many different ways.

Emigrating to a new country and adapting to (and satisfying) qualifications there can be very tough. I wish you all the best with it. Keep a positive spirit going, and everything will turn out fine.

Take care,

~ Jason

Hi saidkamila,

It might be too late for me to guide you to the right place for your essay, because it seems that you made a comment about my essay..."First impression...." already. So, use the same way to enter your essay; all you have to do is to choose one topic, you can find these under " Hot Topics". I will recommend you use a timer when you start with it, therefore you can estimate what you have to do in order to improve. Talk to you soon, hopefuly.

Marie.

Hi Umak,

I learned that you happen to be from the phils. also and is preparing for the state board. Would it happen to be FPGEE? well if you wanted to go to a review center here in CA just drop me a line and I can refer you to the center where I went to. And yeah this site is cool and very enlightening I am very happy to find an interactive site like this too.

Hi all,

I am a new member here, and just like everyone I am so please to find this forum. I happen to be a regular of testmagic and it is where I found this link so I am also thankful to them. First of all I am also from the Philippines same as those who are already a member here.I wanted to hone my English skills as a preparation to TOEFL that I needed to pass for licensing.I move here in North America last November 2006, so that would make me two years by the next November. Although, English is a second language in my country it did not became a passport to pass the TOEFL easily. And now I realized that if you really wanted to learn a language the best thing to do is practice, practice, practice. I am grateful to the founder of this forum as it would give us newbies the opportunity to express ourselves and be heard. The best part of it is that we will be getting comments for free.

Hope to learn a lot from here. See you guys around :))

Hi,
I am a foreign pharmacist and a mother of two toddlers. I am also struggling to get required Toefl ibt points to get Foreign pharmacy graduate equilency certification. I passed FPGEE in June 2006. Now I need at least 21/30 in reading, 18/30 in listening, 24/30 in writting, and 26/30 in speaking in TOEFLibt to get FPGEC. I am ok in reading and listening I always get 25 to 29 points in each section. but I have problem with Speaking and writting. I keep on getting 22 in writting and 24 in speaking. I took this exam more 6 times but I could not get the required marks. I am losing confidence on myself but I know I'll do it one day.

Hi sadcat,

I am exactly in the same situation as you !!! I passed the FGPEE in june of 2007 ( San Mateo), and I have also taken iBT 7 times!!! The last one, Aug. 16th. I am waiting for the score. As you, I score always very high in reading (27-29), listening (26-28), even my writing is good ( depends on the topic, and I type with 2 fingers, which is sometime challenging ...).But, in speaking I always scored 23; last time 24.

I even wrote a letter to the board of pharmacy in Illinois, to complain about thier high expectations, especially in writing. The skills that are important in the pharmacy are: listening and comprehension, don't you think? We have to be able to undrestand the customers and find out the informations for them, right? This involves reading and listening, but not writing.
Even when I was going to college in germany, we wrote reports about our experiments and analysis and not essays!!!
I asked for an interview with one of the board member in Sacramento, but they said they cannot honor my request. I have to score 26 in speaking! Can you believe that? I read somewhere that the average "American student scores 22 in speaking on the iBT test. So, why are they demanding foreign students to score higher? I believe it is all politic, because if we are good enough to work as pharmacy technicians ( I have nothing against pharma. tech.), why can we not work as pharmacy intern, I don't get it; in both cases we have to communicate with the customers...

Anyway, don't lose your confidence, I know it is hard to get motivated over and over again; but this is the only way we can get the certificat and therefore our permit as pharmacy intern, especially here in California. That' where you live, right? Because in some States you don't need the TOEFL in order to do the 1500 hours internship, but by the time you do NAPLEX you need the iBT.

P.S. I will send you a private message, if you are living in California, as I presume, we can talk. Only if you want, okay?

Hi Jason,

My name's Karenne and also I'm a teacher, teacher trainer and writer. I'm not exactly sure how I landed up here (fell down the tunnel of time otherwise known as the internet) but am very happy to have done so and have delicious'd your site for my students.

I have a teaching tool which may be very helpful to your students practising for their oral exams and generally for all those in the forum but I wasn't really sure about whether or not to add the details to the "general" area - so I thought I'd let you write me and tell me if that's okay! (I couldn't find a link on this site or the other for contacting you specifically).

The tool is called "ConversationControlTM" - it's free of charge and provides a tangible way for students and teachers to measure progress in their speaking abilities.

You record details of new vocabulary, pronunciation, collocations & phrases, areas of weaknesses as well as progress.

It's available at www.kalinago-english.com: bottom of front page. Teachers can watch a video and download copies! You are welcome to upload copies on to this site if you like.

Take care, don't hesitate to write me through this forum or personally.

Karenne
