Hi Fatenah,

Nice to have you here in our forum. Sadly, I think you are not alone in feeling that the way you are taught English is very useless and theoretical. However, the good thing is you realize you need to improve your practical skills and you are trying to do something about it!

You said that you are a new user of the keyboard, so here are a couple of tips for you:

1. Try to capitalize your "I" (it's okay in casual chat, I guess, but I still feel more comfortable as a teacher to see learners typing that one correctly!)

2. Be a little more careful with your punctuation: use periods (.) after main sentences, a CAPITAL letter to start new sentences, and leave a space ( ) after each comma you use.

Those are just small tips for you. I think you have already made great progress with using an English key board!

In any case, it's great to see you here in this forum trying to use your English for genuine communication. Good for you!

Best wishes,

~ Jason

The reason why I am learning English. Well, most of all I like learning foriegn language. I belive the language is the greatest product of certain culture. I mean, learning Enlgish makes me possible to understand foriegn culture. I am now learning English, Japaness, chiness now but I hope I have a chance to learn Italian some day! It will make my sight broader than before. That's why I learn English.
The hardest thing for me is that it's grammar system is very different to that of Korean. It makes me very tired- also it is interesting

Hi Jason,
Well, from the fisrt time I heard english language I found it sweet, light and vital so I liked it. In addition, I like to be acquainted with others way of living and thinking and English was the suitable bridge to this bank. Moreover, I dont like limitations, and English takes me where the vanished limits.
For those reasons I am learning English and for the same reasons I join this wonderful site, so i am greatful to you Jason that you offer us this gift.
For the difficultties, i think that the difficulties we learners face ,are not of the language per se, but they are in the way we are thoght it and in the way we think of this language. For example I find pronunciation like a native too difficult, also I usually do spelling mistakes and the problem is I sometimes repeat them; maybe I lack practice; I don't know exactly, that's why I write you, Mr Jeson, on the hope of helping me.

Why are you learning English and what benefits do you think it will bring to you?
Also, what in particular makes English difficult for you to master?

Hi everyone,

No reason to have any doubt about it, English is a language that is used widely in the world of business. No matter where you are traveling, big cities or touristic places, English is almost a must if you want to be connected. Let's even not talk about it, if you decided to move to a country where the official language is English. This is my situation. Since 2003 I move to USA. Even though I live in Texas (34% of the populations is Hispanic)I feel that is very important to master the language. It is easy to live and sometimes to work into Hispanic groups here, but I think that is not the wisest decision my family and I should take. Besides, my goal is to get my license as a pharmacist, so it is not necessary to say that it is very important to me.
Regarding to the benefits that I think to master English would bring to me, I would mention several things.Among them, I would say I would be able to communicate effectively my thoughts, I would feel more relaxed when I am taking with native people, I would not be deceive easily and I would be able to find a good job.
Relating to the last question, what I find most difficult to master English is, when I am learning a new language, the tendency of the teacher is to teach me a lot of grammar, but few practice. In others words, I am struggling with being more fluent when I speak. I try to speak with native people any time I have the opportunity and the day is coming when I will be able to communicate more effectively in a foreign language.
Talk to you all, later.

The reason why I'm learning English is that I like it. I'm a kind of person who does what he wants to do and never does what he doesn't want to do. When I graduated from high school, my father told me that I should enter the law school but I didn't hear him. I entered Department of English Education so I can realize my dream, to be a teacher and study what I like at the same time. Learning English is always joyful to me although it's very difficult.

Specially, I'm poor at speaking English. I get nervous when I speak English. I know that it's not a shame for me to be poor at English because I'm Korean, but it's terrifying still. I think I should practice harder and harder. That is the only way I know.

I learn English because I want to speak English well, make foreign friends, want to be an English teacher and so on. There are so many benefits to use English well, so it is one of the reasons I want to learn English. I can speak foreigners with English so I can make foreign friends using English. And also I think I can surf other countries websites on the Internet because most websites are written in English. Then I can take more chances to touch with other culture directly. So I think I can think more widely. Does it make sense?

But it is very hard to master English. For me, few chances to use English make English difficult to master. If I learn some words or expressions, there’s no where I could use it, frequently. Then I forget them, and I have to study them again. I think, the more I use English, the better my English skills. I want to get the places where I could my English ability.

I have learned English for about 10 years but until graduating high school, I don't think I will study English after the graduation. However, now, I'm majoring in English education. What a contradictory! Actually, I didn't like English at all even if I know its benefits in this society. But I wanted to become an English teacher and there are many seats for English majoring teacher in training. That's why I entered this department but living with my colleagues, I get to gain interest in English. Now, I just want to be good at English, which made me interesting in learning English.

However, it is really difficult for learners to learn English and to be good at English because, you may know, English has totally different languae system from Korean. And the order of the words are completely opposite! I think this is the most biggiest difficulty in achieveing good English ability.

I learn English because I like it. That's why I'm attending this English Education department in university. Some others maybe feel that I'm strange and weird, but I feel really happy while studying English. Although sometimes there has been difficult tasks, the time I felt exhausted and doubted myself if I were doing well, but in the process where I tried to do I always felt exhilaration on my job even in trivial things. And, nuturally, the benefits that bring to me is to have a chance of becoming English teacher. It also can be the reason why I learn English, but now I'd like to weigh it on my learning English more than becoming teacher.

To me, the most difficult to master is speaking. When I meet foreigners and have to talk to them, always I feel anxiety about 'by what kinds of words I have to begin to talk? or what should I do if they don't understand my words or if I make mistakes in grammar or verbally?'.
So, it is the most difficult for me to eliminate these kinds of fear in real speaking situation with natives. For this reason, I think, speaking area is really hard to master in learning English.

Hi,everyone
I like the idea of the post why learning English and what are the benefits and difficulties? I have passion for learning languages in general and extreme one for learning English in specific.I found that English is a very enjoyable and interesting and easy as well.I have been learning English since I was so young and although it is not my mother tongue I find myself very much at ease in expressing myself well and reading as well every issue that I would encounter that made me very much related to that language.English language is a universal language that you find so many people speaking it and dealing with in every possible way.The difficulties that I would encounter most that when I don't find a native speaker to correct me about some mistakes that I unintentionally make, the other problem is also when writing an essay the correct use of some phrases and the content of the passage might seem very incoherent and vague. But,despite all that difficulties I try so hard to overcome those difficulties in a way that really surprises me.I have recently learned how to type and I am practicing that typing sometimes by submitting as much essay that I could.Learning new things about that language makes me very eager to know more, and by knowing my way to that splendid magnificent forum that made English to be more easy. I would say that we could accomplish so many nice and beneficial experiences that would definitely going to help more and more learners to make language no more a big barrier.

English is the most popular language in the world. And I think it 's a key to succeed, too.Almost of countries usually choose English to communicate and that's very difficult if we don't know anything about it.Learning English'diffculties is vocabularies because if I don't usually use them,I'll forget.I think listening skill is the most hard in 4 skills.Native people talk too fast and I'm too hard to understand what they are talking about !...
Can you help me about listening skill? Thanks for your reading !

Well, to be honest, Lyly, the best way to help you improve your listening skill is to encourage you to help yourself... and that is by doing a LOT of listening to genuine English, on a regular basis, focusing on topic areas that you personally find interesting.

I highly recommend the World Video News discussion thread in this forum, where you will find a lot of Reuters video news articles.

Basically:

1. Try to listen to a new article every day

2. Don't panic or give up if you don't understand everything you hear

3. Use the video images to assist your comprehension (it's even a good idea to watch the video first with the volume turned down to help you absorb the situations presented)

4. Do multiple listenings - first listening, just try to catch the general idea, second listening, try to note 3-4 main ideas, third and any other listenings, try to add as many details as you can to the main ideas

5. Think about and respond to the article. Give your opinion about it. By responding to the article, you are creating a "full circle" involving input and output (in speaking or writing). Ask other forum members for their opinions about the article, or respond to their comments about it. Get interactive!

6. Above all else, be patient - you need constant exposure on a regular basis to make improvement in your listening ability (it won't improve drastically in just one day or even one week)

I hope those pointers give you something to think about!

Best,

~ Jason
