HI,Jason! It's a great list!I heard about the list of 3000 basic English words. This one is shorter :) and I felt happy reading your "850" list because I know all of them. But it's really good test for vocabulary. It's a pitty!:)There no any words with "X" and "Z" ;)

At first, I thought it would be easy but after I look through them. I got shocked. These are basic English words you said, so I think I know most of them. But there are many words that I don't know. Some of them I never heard of. I feel so dissapointed to myself. I should try harder. Thank you for motivating me.

Hi! Umm...basic words..:) I think I already know these words, but not perfectly.(I didn't know the meaning exactly about the words like apparatus, tin, etc.)
But, when I was writing some essays, I had a lot of experiences that I could not remember some easy and basic words such as circumstance. I wanna overcome this problem. What should I do? Should I memorize these easy words once again? Will this problem be solved by writing many many essays?
I'm looking forward to advice from anyone who know the solution about this.

I know most of them.. And they are not so difficult I guess. But this makes me sorrow that 'I know those words' but 'I don't use those words'. I mean, when I see those words, I can say what it means but when I write an essay, I don't use those words. Words that I use are very restrictive I think I have to write more essays in the effort of using many more words.

Hi Yoonji and Junho,

Vocabulary development is very important, but also very complicated. There is a difference between vocabulary memorized and vocabulary acquired; vocabulary in short-term memory and long-term memory; and vocabulary that is known from receptive versus productive capacity.

It's impossible to explain it all in one small post, but my advice is to make sure you keep reading a lot, which will increase your exposure to words, and increase your familiarity with the words you already 'understand'. If you also maintain your writing and speaking (as in, giving quick thoughts and opinions about a variety of things), the opportunities to use the words will also increase.

Another thing is to remember vocabulary in chunks and collocations, but also functional applications. Yoonji's example of "circumstance" is a good one. For example:

Under the circumstances, ...  (used as a linking term for cause and effect)

The circumstances have changed.  (used to indicate changes in situation)

a victim of unfortunate circumstances

From this, you'll also gain the awareness that circumstance occurs more often in plural form than singular. But the most important thing is not just remember the word and it's basic meaning, but the ways it can be used effectively in communication for particular meaning and effect.

Hope that gives you some ideas,

~ Jason

I feel a little relieved in that I already know almost all these 'Basic words' except about four words. But, I feel ashamed that I hardly use some of these words and can't easily pull them out of my memory when I have to write someting. Maybe,, that's the problem that most English learners go through.

Wow! Thank you again.

Yes!! I totally felt that difference when I wrote essays or talk with foreigners in English. I think, I just have memorized vocabulary, and have not tried to use it. That is the problem I think!

, but my advice is to make sure you keep reading a lot, which will increase your exposure to words, and increase your familiarity with the words you already 'understand'.

Oh! From reading...! I don't know why I didn't know this method in learning 'English' because I already knew this method in leaning 'Korean' vocabulary. I think I am afraid of 'English', so I can not think English as a 'language'. Though, I will have a confidence on English for improving my English skill, I will!!

Next...remember vocabulary in chunks and collocations...!
I am grateful of your example and these usages.:) And I didn't know that the word 'circumstance' was used in plural form than singular one.

Mr.Renshaw:) Thank you for giving me those adivice!
I will do these methods to improve my writing, also speaking.

Good luck!

Hi, Jason. I found it just before.
Wow. It will be really helpful to me and others and students who will be taught by us in future. hahaha. I strongly think that without basic terms or vocabulary, it cannot be successful to learn or ultimately master one language whether it is a mother tongue or foreign laguages. Anyway thanks for it.
Also could you allow me to use this? I'm thinking of using it as a tutoring--actually, I have been tutoring some students as a voluteer--material and I thought I have to get a permission about it because you wrote this. Anyway I hope you to complete your holiday happily :D

Wow, this information is amazing! It could be extremely helpful to the students who have difficulty in learning and memorizing English vocaburary. Most of the vocaburary is well-known for me, however, I should try to memorize and understand all the words.

Thanks for your favor to show this vital English material, I will use it to memorize the words.

Of course, Jeongah - you can use any materials or ideas you see around this forum. I know you weren't part of the Teaching Practical English class this term, but I advise you to look around in that forum because there are a lot of practical teaching ideas and materials there that might be of use to you.

Best of luck,

~ Jason

I totally agree with yunhee.
Looking carefully this list of basic English words, I think though these words are easy to remember, it's difficult for English learners to draw these things out from their memories. The only solution I think is to practice constantly.
