Here is a typical writing task from Part 1 of the Writing Section of the PET (Preliminary English Test).

Look at each sentence about going to the cinema. For each one, see if you can complete the second sentence underneath it so that it means the same as the original sentence. You cannot use more than three words to complete each sentence.

Example: Rob and Ellie have been to the cinema together.

Sealed ->  Rob has been to the cinema with Ellie.

1. Nearly every seat was taken in the cinema.

Sealed ->  There weren't .............................................. in the cinema.

2. Ellie had a worse seat than Rob.

Sealed ->  Rob had .............................................. than Ellie.

3. Ellie couldn't see the screen very well.

Sealed ->  Ellie found .............................................. to see the screen.

4. Rob said that he had seen the film before.

Sealed ->  Rob said: "I .............................................. this film before."

5. They spent three hours watching the film.

Sealed ->  The film  .............................................. for three hours.

Click on "reply" and copy and paste in the sentences above. See if you can complete the missing words (remember: no more than three words per gap) to make each sentence match the meaning of the original sentence above it!

If you submit your responses here, I'll let you know how you did.

Good luck!

~ Jason

Very good try.

Number 2 is correct. Number 1 is almost correct, but you need to change your word order slightly.

Numbers 3, 4 and 5 are incorrect, unfortunately. I think you made a simple typo with number 4, but 3 and 5 are clearly incorrect.

Would you like to try again?

Cool  ~ Jason

Hi,

Numbers 1, 2 and 4 are correct.

Numbers 3 and 5 are good tries, but unfortunately, still not quite correct.

For number 3, you don't need the "be" verb there.

For number 5, think of a verb that describes time or duration...

Good luck,

~ Jason
