The graphs below show population growth and rates of urbanisation in China and India over time, with projections beyond 2005.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown in the graphs.

You should write at least 150 words.

Population of US has grown constantly approximately from 150 millions in 1950 to 300 millions in 2005, and is expected to increase approximately to 400 millions in 2050 with the same rate as before 2005.

Population of Idia has grown approximately from 375 million in 1950 to 1125 millions in 2005, and is expected to increase approximately to 1600 millions in 2050 with a slightly reduced rate.

Population of China has grown approximately from 550 million in 1950 to 1300 millions in 2005 with the similiar rate of India, and is expected to increase approximately to 1375 millions in 2050 with a peak of 1450 millions in 2030.

Population of India will surpass China in 2030s and urbanisation is undergoing fast.

The population of China was about 1300 millions and it was more than 1100 millions of India's. But increasement of India's is so fast, so it will be same or even more, 1400 millions before 2030. In the graph, it is expected that Population of China will begin to decrese after 2030, but India will not.

The Urbanisation of China and India is rapid. The rural population of china is decreasing. In last decade it decreased by half millions but urban people are incresed by 150 millions. On the other hand, in India, urban and rural population are both incresed. It is because of high rate of population incresement in India.

One graph is about population growth in India, China and the U.S and the other is about urbanisation in India and China.

First, about the population growth, The U.S population has increased just a little, 200 million to 300 during 55years, so just 50% has increased. On contrast to the U.S, The population in India and China was rapidly increasing. Both India and China have almost same trend from 1950 to 2005. In the case of China, there were abour 500 million people in 1950 but in 2005, the population is up to over 1,250 million. It has increased about 250% during 55 years. When it comes to India, it was about 300 million in 1950, and it increased up to over 1,150 million. It has increased about 350% during 55 years.

This is researched by United Nation Population Division

Jeheon - you've only really talked about the population figures here and there is nothing about the rate of urbanization. The two graphs can be related to each in some ways, and you need to write about the possible relationship between the two.

Language pointers:

1) The population of the US

2) We can use millions as a word by itself (to mean many), but with a specific number it is always million (no plural -s): so 150 million, 375 million, etc.

3) expected to increase to approximately .... (check your word order)

Hope those pointers help...

Best,

~ Jason

The first graph shows the population growth of the three countries, India, China and the US. All of the countries have had increasing tendencies until now, 2005, but the US has much less increse rate. The population of India and the US will increse until 2050. And China's population will decrease from about 2030.At that time, India will have more population than China.

The second graph is about urbanisation of China and India. We can see the urbanisation rate from the diffenrence of urban and rural population. All of the population in rural and urban is increasing until 2030 except for China's rural one. It has decreased from about 1995. In china, urban population will be more than rural in 2015. But India will have more on rural even in 2030.

In short, India's population will increase more than China, but the urbanisation rate will be higher in China.

The population growth in India gradually has grown from 500 million in 1950 to 1300 million in 2006 while the population growth in China has grown nearly from 375 million to 1125 million in 2006.

It is expected that the population growth in India will be as similar as in China in 2027 and it will more grown rapidly than in China.

The population in China urban will catch up with in China rural in 2015.
The population in China rural will be decreased slightly on the basic year in 2020 while the population in China urban will be increased sharply on the basic year in 2005.

The graphs explains about both the population growth in India, China and the US and urbanisation in India and china.

In the first one of them, the population of India has steadily increased since 1950 and it shows it will keep growing. On the contrary, that of china has also grown to approximately just below 1,500 million until 2030 and then it appears it will be expected to decline slightly. Unlikely two countries, the US has had the growing number of population continuously.

In the second graph, there are two countries to be compared with each other. In China, the people in rural regions has been made a curve which is a highest in around 1990 and then it has declined. However, in urban areas, people has been gathering far more sharply. In the same way, Unban people in India started to grow less than those in China. The second graph shows the expectation of the growth in India will bw much more populated in rural sides since 2005 than that in China.

There are two graphs above. First graph shows population growth in India, China and US. China's population grow rapidily from 1950 until 2005. For about 550 to 1230 millions. But after 2030, China's population will be decreased slowly. India is simlar pattern to China until 2030. But India's population expected to grow fast until 2050. So after 2030, India's population expected to exceed China. US population grow slowly from 1950 to 2050 about 350 million.

Second graph shows urbanisation in India and China. China's urban and rural population will be equal in 2015 for about 700 millions. And after 2015 urban population will grow more. India's urban population will grow until 2030 for about 580 millions. But rural population steel more than urban. This graph shows that china's urbanisation is more fast than India's.

This is a pretty good response, Seoneok. You've done a good job of interpreting and explaining the information in the graphs.

Please note my point above for Jeheon's post about using million versus millions.

Also note population increase - we don't say "increasement". The word increase can be used as both a noun and a verb.

In terms of your content, I would have liked to see your interpretation of the two graphs together. What could we conclude about population increase and urbanization in these countries, considering the two factors together, then comparing the two countries?

Anyway, good job!

~ Jason

Hi Joohwan,

You've done a reasonably good job of explaining the population growth information, but there is nothing there about the urbanization factors, or how they can be considered alongside the population growth statistics.

Language factors for you to consider:

- Punctuation: Don't use CAPITAL letters for a word in the middle of a sentence or after a comma (,)

- In contrast to (not on contrast to)

Best of luck,

~ Jason

Hi Dongwan,

I think this is the best report for the graphs so far. You've reported the information for both graphs very well, and wrapped things up in a clear conclusion.

Nice effort!

Hi Yoobin,

How nice to see a contribution from you here! How have you been?

You've reported some good information here about the population increase factors, but I don't see anything about the rates of urbanization, or how urbanization relates to population growth in the different countries.

I recommend reading Dongwan's report just above yours. It is an excellent report about the information, and is clear and well organized.

Hope to see more contributions from you around the forum sometime soon!

Take care,

~ Jason

This is quite a good report, Sunghan. Well done.

I'd recommend some editing of this sentence:

Unlikely two countries, the US has had the growing number of population continuously.

=

Unlike the two countries previously mentioned, the US population has been steadily increasing at a far less pronounced rate of growth.

Best,

~ Jason

Good work with this, Gapsoo. The report itself has good content and organization, but I think you need to be a little careful with your verb tenses, use of passive, and talking about million and number changes:

There are two graphs above. First graph shows population growth in India, China and US. China's population grow grew rapidily from 1950 until 2005. For from about 550 to 1230 millions. But after 2030, China's population will be decreased slowly. India is has a simlar pattern to China until 2030. But India's population is expected to grow fast until 2050. So after 2030, India's population is expected to exceed China. US population grow growth from 1950 to 2050 remains moderate and is predicted to reach about 350 million.

Second graph shows urbanisation in India and China. China's urban and rural population will be equal in 2015 for at about 700 millions for each area. And after 2015 urban population will grow more. India's urban population will grow until 2030 for to about 580 millions. But rural population steel will still be more than urban. This graph shows that china's urbanisation is more fast faster than India's.

All in all, a good effort!

~ Jason

The first graph show population growth. In india and china, population is increasing by 250 million every three year. The population of india will increase continuely, but The population of china is predicted to decrease after 2035. so, The population of india will surpass it of china in 2030. The population of U.S. will incresse slowly.

In the second graph, the urbanisation of china is increasing shaply. so, in 2015 urban population will be more than rural population. In india, urban and rural population is increasing at the same time. Maybe in 2040, urban population will be more.

In short, the population of countries will increase continuously, especially urban population will increase more than rural.

There are two kinds of graphs. The first one indicates population growth in India, China and US, and the second one does urbanization in India and China. In the second one, the difference between urban population and rural population means urbanization. Namely, when urban population is growing fast and is more than rural one, we can say that the country is getiing urbanized.

However, they show a connection between population growth and urbanization in a developing country. Higher urbanization has an effect on lower population growth. As known, US is a developed country and urbanized well, so the slope of the first graph goes more slowly than the others. In case of China, after 2015 when the urban population is more, China population growth in the first graph stays. In addition, more sharply the slope of India urban goes, more slowly the slope of India population does.

The first graph shows population growth. In India and China, the population is increasing by approximately 250 million every three years. The population of India will increase continuely on a continuing basis, but the population of China is predicted to decrease after 2035. So, the population of India will surpass it of China's in by 2030. The population of the U.S., by contrast will incresse increase slowly.

In the second graph, the urbanisation of China is increasing shaply. So, in by 2015, the urban population will be more than the rural population in that country. In India, urban and rural population is increasing at roughly the same time rate. Maybe in after 2040, the urban population will be more higher than the rural population in that country, according to the trends shown in the graph.

In short, the population of both countries will increase continuously, especially and the urban population in particular will increase more than the rural one will.

Good effort, Yongil.

Looking at the corrections, you can see that you need to be careful of:

- Using CAPITAL letters for countries and nations (China, India, etc.)

- Using the word "by" to show the time when something will have happened or be happening

- Capital letters to start sentences (So, ...)

- Not using capital letters in the middle of sentences (but the population of China) if the word is not a country or other special name

I hope those small tips help you. I think you did a pretty good job of explaining what the graphs show, and that is the most important thing for this task! Well done.

Hi Seyong,

This is an excellent interpretation! It could have been better supported with some actual statistics, but I think the insights you've shared would be really helpful to someone who wants a good clear idea about what the graphs could be signifying when considered together as triangulated data. Great work!

Quick language tips for you:

In case of China = In China's case / OR In the case of China

In addition, more sharply the slope of India urban goes, more slowly the slope of India population does. = In addition, as India's rate of urbanisation increases more sharply, the overall figure for population growth increases at a less rapid rate.

Good work and thanks for your efforts!

~ Jason
