Crows Hanging Out

Summary: The sight of hundreds of crows in the air might remind you of a scary scene of Hitchcock's movie "The Bird". However, in reality, they are not attacking people. They flock together in hundreds and thousands just because they enjoy the warm air in those parts of the region and want to meet up with other crows, which indicates they are sociable. There are other interesting characteristics about the black feathered birds. They are intelligent enough to make tools, and beneficial to humans because they catch insects. The only problems they cause are the noise they make and the mess they leave behind. No matter how citizens try to disperse them away, they can't manage to get rid of them.

Opinion: I've watched the movie "The Bird," which made me rethink about the birds; Are they so mean to attack people? But I know film is just film, which is not real.
On the contrary, I am fond of birds regardless of its species. I like sparrows, swallows, magpies, and maybe even crows. But I don't like the pigeons much.
By the way, in Korea, crows are believed to be omens. I don't know when this belief started but crows are related with 'deaths'. Is it because they are black? Or is it because the noise they make isn't as attractive?

Hi Pilsu,

I really enjoy reading your summaries of the National Geographic news videos and your follow up opinions. I don't always have time to watch the videos myself, so it's very enlightening to me!

I've always thought crows (and for that matter ravens, their larger cousins) get a little bit of an unfair negative reputation - just for being colored black and for being a bit noisy. Even the English language itself treats them quite harshly (the technical word for a flock - or group - of crows or ravens is "a murder of crows" or a "murder of ravens" - can you believe it?). You've done a very good job of pointing out some other facts about crows that perhaps people ought to be aware of.

I think crows are treated as omens (usually negative omens) by a lot of different cultures. It could also have something to do with the fact that crows are scavengers, often seen at the scene of battlefields where lots of bodies will be lying around...

Like you, I like most kinds of birds, and I actually dislike pigeons as well! They're not particularly attractive or elegant, and they annoy me when they come up and peck around when I'm sitting in the park or something.

Best wishes,

~ Jason

I happen to saw the video too and in my personal opinion maybe if I am living there in those areas infested by crows I think I might also find it odious as the scene gives me the creeps. It would appear like I am on a real life horror movie of the twilight zone.I am not a bird person but I do appreaciate those cute looking species like the hummingbird or the like. However, I should understand that like us humans they also deserve the right to share the planet too.
