Writing and reading is the key to a successful and independent life in the contemporary society. Look for instance to the uncountable blogs in the internet where the people express their opinions to tell their friends what they were observing at the weekend or to publish political things like violation to the human rights in china during the Olympic games. From my point of view reading and writing is obviously more important than it was in the past because most of the jobs are knowledge based nowadays and it will help you to become a independent thinking and acting person! I will outline my points in detail in the following.
Firstly, do you know the sociological term “knowledge based working world”? If this is not the case, let me sum it up for you: Most of the jobs fifty or sixty years ago required strength and manpower, because the majority of jobs were placed in the agriculture. Nowadays the social and technology change brought jobs to light, which are based on specific knowledge, like writing essays for newspapers or use excel for calculation and consulting jobs. These jobs have obviously the requirement that that you can write, speak und read fluently, otherwise your chances at the labour market will not be too high.
Secondly, the ability to write and read will help you to become more independent. For instance, look back at your childhood. Your parents surely told you all the time things you could not know because you were not able to read and write. In the modern world, everything is more complex then it was for example hundred years before. Especially the international relations between nations are getting more complex and to know what is going in you have to use your reading skills and furthermore, to publish your opinion you have indeed to write. So this ability will make you an independent and critical thinking person!
In conclusion, to cope with this complex world you have to use your writing and reading skills and to be successful in a competitive and keen labour market, you should develop them constantly.
Speaking and writing is how you convey the gain knowledge that you earned. Honestly speaking I agree that today speaking and writing is more important than as to yesterday. Modern technology is one factor that counts in.
Let say the computer, how does it works; basically you would find the steps and proper usage of the machine in a manual. If you’re illiterate to do that you will find it difficult. Now a day, the computer is everywhere, even the 3 years old kid knows how to operate and use it. As I would say everybody is using a computer. If not, you’re left behind.
In an organization, where you are working, have you encountered that some of them are speaking different languages, but then considered English as national language. If you weren’t able to express your opinion thru the usual language, did you find it no one is willing to listen to you? So what you did, shut up your mouth, sit in the corner and just watched them. How would you develop this ability if you just ignored. I really don’t believe that in just simple way you wouldn’t learn it. Well, if this happens for the last decade it won’t bother you. But today, you’ll find everywhere the basic steps how to learn simple language and in a very easy way.
So, in summary writing and speaking is very necessary today. Since everybody adapt the new modern technology, in just a minute or one click you already know how to do it.
Hi Peter,
This is a good attempt, and would earn you a 4.0 ~ 4.5 on the iBT scale. The organization and clear attempts at developing ideas are great. It suffers slightly from being a little "top heavy" -- more content in the introduction than in each of the body paragraphs -- and could do with a better conclusion.
You appear to round out your introductions a lot with "I will outline my points in detail in the following." I'd recommend against this, because it's a little like stating the obvious. It would have been better to limit the scope of your contextualized topic lead in, and finish your introduction with "My opinion is based on the fact that knowledge has become the foundation of the working world and independent critical thinking these days requires reading and writing skills more than ever." Or something of that nature. This way you are summarizing your main points and providing an initial map for your reader as they make the transition to the body of your essay.
I'd also advise against asking direct questions to form topic sentences in the body, followed with statements like: "If this is not the case, let me sum it up for you." It could look a little patronizing to the reader. Just state and explain your idea directly.
Best of luck,
~ Jason
Hi Umak,
I'm so sorry to inform you of this, but you're going to rate a 1.0 or 1.5 for this essay. You have misunderstood the general topic and written an essay that is off-topic. The focus should have been on reading and writing ability, whereas yours is about speaking and writing, or language learning in general. The TOEFL raters are really strict on sticking to the topic and immediately assign very low scores to essays that don't do so.
Would you like to try re-submitting your essay for this topic? I'll be happy to look at and rate any new attempt you make.
Keep trying ~ your efforts are helping you to make progress!
Best wishes,

The ability to read and write is more important today than it was in the past.
Reading and writing as we say is a form of communication, which makes us humans excel from the other living creatures. Although, we have reached a lot of advancement in technology today, but still, I disagree to consider reading and writing as something negligible in the past because we should consider that people in the past also have their own form of communication.
First, being one form of communication I believe that reading and writing was the thing that made our ancestors establish a well organized and perfectly documented history. Take for example the hyroglypics done by the Egyptians. Eventhough, it took us modern humans decades to dicepher the message hidden in there, still it has serve them a very relevant form of communication which is quite obvious in what they have left in our history. The language that they invented may seem odd to us but the visible signs and historical landmarks is convincing enough to believe that they are operating in some form of a language, and that established language have brought them success.
Another thing that I can say that made writing and reading important to the past is the example of inscriptions done in the caves by prehistoric humans. According to the study conducted by archeologists it is compelling that the prehistoric humans was able to innovate a form of communication, which taught them to write, and have them understand it by reading the message. This archaic symbols have serve them a lot of purpose such as important details like making journals regarding the environment that they live in. One of the importance that this records brought them is some sort of filing system where they can place their observations to provide them organized access , so they can succeed later. As an example is their observation of the animal migration that they have noticed is going in cycle. After learning that the cycle is continously reccuring they have later manage to perfect their records, and this as I may say have been important to them and to their descendants to, because after having an establish records, which was brought by careful writing and reading they has always been successful with their hunting.
Finally, the last argument that I can state regarding the importance of reading and writing in the past is the fact that I believe that our ancestors were the ones who invented this form of communication, and it was just modified through time. So, in here I cannot disgaree more that reading and writing is not important to them. Although, research is still continously being done, still, I believe that something went on along the way which have made modern humans settled the differences in languages. They were able to bridge the gap to reach out and understand everyone, and this is evident now.
In my conclusion, no matter how far we have reached in terms of technology now, nor no matter how busy we are today, Still, we cannot compare reading and writing skills being irrelevant in the past than today. Our ancestors were the first one who innovated those language tools for us. Although, the languages that they have engender seems cryptic or enigmatic to us, but we cannot argue about the accomplishments they have reach in handling us down what we have now. It serve the purpose of recording history, as a journal on everyday activities and relevant details, and most importantly the efforts they did to innovate communication.

The ability to read and write is more important today than it was in the past.
In the past people communicated only with speaking and listening skills. Nowadays, however, the reading and writing have been become more important in communication especially with paper and computer materials. There are two reasons why these skills are very essential presently.
To begin with, most people in the past worked in agricultural and then industrial sectors. The required skills for supporting the sectors are basic communication and workforces. Then, reading and writing skills were not important for jobs at that time. However, the econimic structures has changed, people who have well education shift to work in service sector. This sector provides higher income for workers because it requires reading and writing skills.
Furthermore, the information technology evolution has begun in 1970s until today. Information becomes important sources for developing societies. People can communicate with others via electronics mails. Also, they can search for new knowledge and essential information from the internet as well. Therefore, people need to have effectively reading and writing skills in order to follow this new era.
To summarize, the reading and writing proficiency are becoming important skills for people presently. The economic structure has changed from agriculture to service sectors, so workers are required to have the reading and writinng skills. Moreover, we are in the age of the information technology. Reading and writing skills are the important tools for this era.

The ability to read and write is more important today than it was in the past.
Reading and writing are skills that need to be learnt. This learning can come from a formal or informal education. The fact remains that these skills cannot be mastered without some effort. Ability to read and write qualifies one as a learned person in our modern society. This skills need to be acquired by every one both the present day populance and people in the past. The question now is , is reading and writing skills more imperative now than it was in the past? I think these skills are more crucial now than they were before because our fore-fathers were mostly illiterates and hadly received a form of eduction. In addition to that, documentation of information was less rampant then due to lack of these skills. Moreover, development now is more rapid which has challenged people to becoming more educated to meet the challenges of the society.
People in the past were mostly unlearned. One could easily wonder how they were able to survive and mange their affairs without the ability to read and write. Hardly was there any schools then and many of them were peasant farmers who depended on their farm produce to obtain their daily bread. As there were no much need to go to school coupled with the fact that schools if at all were available, could not be attended by many, the people in the old were not read and so hardly knew how to write.
Moreso, the fact that most events that took place in the olden days were not properly documented or even not documented at all gives credence to my opinion. This is a good evidence that reading and writing was less important then compare to nowadays. For instance, i remember asking my grandmother when she was born and she told me there was no documentation for the time and day she was born. They could make some guess work or even judge by the time they started school. This is indeed a sure way to prove that reading and writing is more important now than hitherto.
Finally, there is rapid development now than it was before. There is specialized schools and facilities that has encouraged reading and writing nowadays. These schools have produced graduates from different fields ranging from medical doctors, pharmacists, nurses, engineers and so on. These people in their differnt professions see customers on regular basis and they need to collect the information of the clients by way of writing. How possible is it then for them to strive well in their professions if they lack reading and writing skills.
To wrap up, although an arguement can be made otherwise, i still assert that reading and writing is highly inevitable in our modern world. A person who lacks then will not only find life miserable, but is almost cut off from the daily happenings of our contemporary world.

The ability to read and write is more important today than it was in the past.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
No one can deny the importance of
reading and writing skills either in the past or future. As a student my self,
I actually read and write in a daily manner. The idea of considering reading
and writing more important today than the past is really controversial and
elusive at the same time. While there would certainly be a variety of point
views which support the notion that the ability to read and write was stronger
in the past than Now, personally I consider it needed currently more than the
past eras. This is mainly based on my feeling that the caring of research in
different areas has already taken place from the twentieth century. Like wise,
this important grows with international interactions which could be observed by
accepting students in the West universities.
First of all, the growth of
research in many areas enhances the importance of having a strong background.
This background should be enriched by extensive readings and writings in that
area. The ability to read and understand the writer ideas or hints either
explicitly or implicitly will build the primary basement needed at the beginning.
After the reading stage, the writing skill comes and focuses on what he/she
concludes in order to write his/her own research. Personally, I faced many
problems in my undergraduate thesis because my abilities in reading and
understanding the research papers was not that good which at the end reflected
on my essay writing so that I didn’t gain a good score and my advisor ask me to
re-do the whole thing again.
In addition to the above mentioned
reason, I think that the growth of accepting international student in the west
universities such as the American ones increases the importance of reading and
writing. This could be seen in one of the most important condition which is to
pass the TOEFL exam. It is already known that this exam focus on such skills as
reading, listening, speaking and writing. I still remember that my brother made
that exam twice to pass, also he exert efforts to improve his ability in
reading and writing to be able to study in the USA.
In conclusion, for me personally,
I think that with the current changes and challenges in all over the world the
ability to read and write became more important than before. This era has big
revolutionary steps especially in different areas of research, let alone the
international communications in trade, commerce, education etc. So I don’t see
any convincing reason to consider reading and writing in the past is more
important than now.
