The study of English as a second or foreign language has exploded globally over the past few decades. It raises an essential question: why do people feel they need to learn English?

Explain what you think are the main reasons people in your country have for learning English. Support your ideas with details and examples.

============================================================================

Jason's essay writing tips for this topic:

This topic calls for an essay that is a combination of opinion and categorization. "Reasons for learning English in your country" is the central topic. You'll need to break that down into a variety of different reasons based on your general opinion, then explain each reason in its own body paragraph, supported with explanations and examples.

If you can come up with three different reasons, here's how your rough essay plan might look:

A. Introduction
- Introduce the broad topic of English language learning in your country
- State that there are a variety of reasons for this
- Briefly summarize the three main reasons you've come up with (each of which will be explored in the body paragraphs that follow)

B1. Body Paragraph 1
- State the first reason in general terms, as your topic sentence for this paragraph
- Give some detailed explanation
- Provide some sort of example that demonstrates the reason in action

B2. Body Paragraph 2
- State the second reason in general terms, as your topic sentence for this paragraph
- Give some detailed explanation
- Provide some sort of example that demonstrates the reason in action

B3. Body Paragraph 3
- State the third/final reason in general terms, as your topic sentence for this paragraph
- Give some detailed explanation
- Provide some sort of example that demonstrates the reason in action

C. Conclusion
- Sum up the three reasons you have explored
- Relate back to the general topic again
- Provide a finishing thought or prediction

Be careful! ~ The essay topic is not really asking you to state whether you approve of English education in your country, or even if you approve of the most prominent reasons. Your opinion is limited to outlining, in an impartial way, what you believe are the most important reasons for learning English based on what you see or know is happening in your country. As an example, I might say that one reason is to advance in one's career, even though personally maybe I don't approve of that reason. Your task is not to judge the reasons, but to report and demonstrate them as the trends you see happening.

Chances to argue your personal opinion will come in future topics! For now, categorize and explain the reasons.

I think that people in my country-pakistan- are not learning English .There are reasons for it.
First of all the medium of instruction in schools is urdu and all the subjects are taught in urdu specially in elementary classes .The English is being starting from classes six and it is taught with help of translation .The students ,first of all make idea in urdu and then translate it into mind so that they could not write and speak properly.
The second reason is that the teachers who are teaching at elementary level have no training in English and they do not teach it to students in proper ways .The methods of teaching are traditional and there is no intention of Government to train teachers for making able them to teach English.
The third reason is that there is shortage of budget for the conduction of training of teachers .sometimes international agencies like UNICEF ,US AID provides fund for it but the corrupt administration spend that kind of fund for their own luxuries .

Learning English is usually a part of getting a high score on a test such as TOEIC or TOEEL for college students. Also, teenagers’ grades are pretty important to making a good school record. Learning English, however, is not only getting excellent scores but also building great abilities. This competence makes people extraordinary. These reasons consist of things like prospering finance business; thinking global insight; achieving academic authorization.

First of all, studying English enable people to prosper their business and extend that of market areas. By trading each other through English, they can get a unity in communication so the works can be effective and implemented sooner than before. And continuous trades lead to technical cooperation that there are no doubts they have mutual understanding in English. The international companies want employee to have experiences knowledge of English in order to win against international competitiveness. For example, Samsung and Sony having plenty of branches in all country of world should know the changes of Apple or Micro Software directly as the information is important under the intelligence community's new structure. Furthermore, the companies’ products offering the brand name and services in English can get many chances to sell in international markets. As a result, learning it is helpful for economic revival.

On top of that, Mass media using in English gives us opportunities expanding worldwide views people already had through the broadcasting systems or mass media like CNN, AP. It is valuable that cultural assets associated interaction and intercommunications with anywhere people live in rather than focusing in the materials and product industry developments. This broad overview provides people with predicting and grasping domestic situations. For instance, the oil price illustrates how affect integrated factors and the universal variations have effect on KOSPI. Individually, I can get diversely jobs without limitations in case I am good at English with open mind and cosmopolitan outlook. Following these reasons, we are care about the world present condition as learning English.

Finally, academic achievements are available to approving through authorized magazines, journals and academy. In western countries, there are lots of great institutes, prestige learned societies. Also, some students want to enter ranking universities by mastering English as much as native speakers communicate. On the other hands, a powerful report by Korean scholar should be presented in English to obtain a position and reputation. This means spreading academic achievements in official languages is good for the entire world. Moreover, Books updated in English is the faster than any kinds of language books. The Internet website of 90 % is offered in English according to professor David Christine on The world paper 20th Mar.2001. Because of these, I recommend to study English to attain scholastic power.

All things considered, gaining an understating of English capacitate is to improve their business and get a multiracial outlook and have an authority in academic field. Some people are worried about exceeding focus of English education; it just like the tail wags the dog. English, however, is official language to live under internationalization. If we did not have English as a international language, we would find a new language to fit these objectives for all mankind.

We can see many people learning English around us. Regardless of age or sex, most Koreans study English now. Students learn English in and out of school and English is one of the most important subject for them. Adults also spend much time learning English in spite of there hard work. There are even some parents who send their children to abroad to have better chance for learning English. Like these, learning English is general trend in Korea and it would be more stronger. Then why do they learn English? what make them to feel they need to learn English? The reasons are different from person or/and situation, but there are common reasons-to communicate with foreigners, to get a better job, to enjoy different culture and so on. Let's have a further look about those reasons.

First, they learn English to communicate with foreigners. Nowadays, it is easy to find foreigners around us. the world is becoming closer and we can't live alone without any contact with other world. Also, many Koreans go traveling around the world. the language and culture are different from country to country, but English is an official language in the world. it is very useful tool to connect different world.

Secondly, They learn English to get a better job. Most companies want their applicants to have a good language skill, especially English even though English is not mush used in that jobs. So they require applicants to show their English skill and TOFLE or TOEIC score is one way of showing their ability. The bigger the company is, the higher score they want. So many people who want to get a better job study English hard and they keep studying English even after they are hired to have better position.

Last but not least, they want to learn Enligh to enjoy other culture. As the internet and transportation are advanced, we can easily contact with different cultures like movie, music, literature and so on. And many of them are in English. For example, Hollywood movies and pop-songs are very popular in Korea. These things motivate them to learn English. We can enjoy dubbed film or translated books in Korean, but still many people want to enjoy them as they are because dubbed or transformed ones couldn't fully convey what the author hopes to say. Also, I've seen the fact on the newspaper that  60% of internet users are using Enlish as their first language, and above 90% of the internet contents are in English. Now, it is the age of information. If we are good at English, we can get much information quickly. These facts motivate them to learn English.

As we looked before, there are various reasons for learning English. someone learn English for communicating with foreigners or getting a better job. others learn English for their hobbies. There are more reasons that I didn't mention, but whatever the reason is, it is certain that much more people in Korea and all over the world will learn English. In this situation, it is important to make clear why do I learn English. If the motivation is strong, it is much easier to achieve the purpose.

Have you ever taken your time to observe people in front of the exit at any American airport? If so, you might have noticed that over the half of people coming out of the gate are Korean people. This is one of the examples that show how eager Korean people are in learning English. Then, there must be some reasons why Korean people are obsessed with the idea of learning English, in other words, what they learn English for. Over the years, the need for learning English in Korea has dramatically increased. While I cannot put all the individual reasons into the several categorizations, there are the main reasons that can cover the general cases. These consist of things like preparing for globalization, experiencing foreign countries’ culture and achieving a better job.

What Korean people learn English for is to prepare for globalization. Globalization has made the world smaller. As a result of this, there are more possibilities to communicate with people from all around the world. For example, some have a business in abroad and some have a foreign friend who keeps in touch with by e-mailing. This reflects that we need a universal language to make it possibly happen. English has been around the universal language over the few decades and has been using in approximately forty countries as an either mother tongue or a second language. In the era of globalization, it is almost impossible to be able to socialize with people without learning English, the universal language. People would like to stay away from getting behind the times because of the disability of using English.

Korean people also learn English to experience the culture of any other countries than Korea. As a simple example of this, we can think of American dramas, which is so popular to Koreans. Getting more people, these days, are watching American dramas, such as ‘Heroes’, ‘Prison Break’, ‘Desperate Housewives’ and so on, as a good way to get to know the American culture. They achieve the indirect experiences about foreign country’s arts, histories and life styles from the dramas. For me personally, actually, this is the very reason I came to learn English for. I used to be interested in the Hollywood celebrities and the American culture when I was younger. At that time, I collected all articles about Hollywood stars and read them for fun. I was so excited to achieve the news about the stars and I learned English more to talk to them just in case I ever meet them in the flesh.

Most of those who are learning English in Korea consider English as the means of getting a better job. English is thought that the most efficient qualification for one’s career and the chief Korean companies most job seekers prefer to work for require their future employees the certain level of English skills. To get qualified for those companies, people are trying to enhance their English skills for the test provided by the company or undergoing the English interview. A friend of mine, whose score is one point away to meet the requirement, has registered for TOEIC class again just for the missing one point. I am sure that she is not alone who does learn English for the certain score a company requires.

To sum up, people in Korea learn English to take a step forward to globalization, to open themselves a door to foreign countries’ culture and to be well prepared for getting a good job. I am opposed to saying that these are the only reasons Korean people learn English. Also, there even seems to be some people who are not sure why they need to learn English in spite of their long-term studying. On the whole, it is a lot better to have a specific goal or reason when we learn English. Otherwise, we might learn English in a passive way and end up making no progress. I would encourage people to look back to see if they are in the right track to reach for the goal in the process of learning English.

Have you ever heard of the term, "wild geese fathers"? These refer to the fathers who send their wives and children overseas to let their children pursue their education in English-speaking countries while they remain in Korea to earn money. More than 40,000 South Korean school-aged children are believed to be living in foreign countries with their mothers. Why so many parents are sacrificing themselves to send their children abroad? This unusual phenomenon was triggered by the ever-growing emphasis on English in Korea where English is viewed as the crucial factor for success. While the reasons for learning English can vary from person to person, it is possible to identify some main reasons. People in Korea learn English to communicate, to increase job prospects, and to get better access to knowledge.

First of all, to communicate is one of the main reasons for learning English in Korea. In the past, most people in Korea did not realize the importance of English as a communicative tool, merely regarding it as another subject to study. Now, more and more people actually acknowledge the fact that English is one of the necessary skills in this era of globalization where there are increasing cross-border movements of goods, services, ideas, and people. In order to catch up with this trend, people need to have sufficient foreign language skills. Although there is a countless number of languages in the world, English is regarded as a global language. In the past decades, with growing interactions with the outside world, Koreans have come to realize the necessity of English. As the number of overseas travellers has increased steadily, the awareness of sufficient English skills has grown accordingly. Although, It would be the best to use local language when traveling, people with sufficient English skills can travel most parts of the world without much difficulty.

Secondly, to better their job prospects is another main reason why Koreans learn English. In the past decade, English has become one of the important factors that companies are looking for in their recruitment, so many people try to improve their English skills to have a better chance of getting a job they want. Since most of the Korean companies require a high score of English tests and now conduct interviews in English, many job applicants including potential ones feel pressured to achieve high level of English proficiency that will bring them closer to their dream job. It is a natural phenomenon for corporations and business to put such a great emphasis on their employees' English skills, since trades and cooperation across national borders are indispensable. It is true that in the world of international business most of the business contracts and conferences are done in English. This means that not only job applicants, but also current employees need to improve their English in order to get promoted or to simply secure their positions.

Finally, to get better access to knowledge is the last main reason Koreans have for learning English. Most of the information on the web is in English, which means that by knowing English people will have greater access to information they need. Moreover, Koreans are known to be very scholastic when it comes to academic. Academic is a very important part of Korean society. However, without sufficient English skills, people are likely to have difficulty accessing to a wide variety of scientific journals, papers, and books. Especially, those who pursue education in graduate level or higher, English becomes a necessity rather than an option. For instance, medical school students in Korea are required to use textbooks and course materials in the original instead of translated version. They learn their fields of study, such as biology, anatomy, and neurology with original texts. This is also relevant to students who are majoring in engineering, economics, and even psychology. From general information to in-depth knowledge, English, in fact, is the most widely-used language in terms of accessing knowledge.

In the past decade, Korea has experienced so-called "English fever" which exhibits a strong emphasis on mastery of English in Korea. People from toddlers to adults all spend considerable amount of time and money to acquire English proficiency. Despite this frenzy, unfortunately, some people do not have any idea why they are learning English, they study English just because everybody else dose so. In this essay, three main reasons for Koreans learning English are identified. The reasons for learning English might vary from each individual, no matter what the reasons are, it is crucial to have clear reasons when it comes to learning English.

Reasons for learning English in our country

Nowadays, learning English is widespread in Korea. Many people, from children to adults, struggle to learn English. Then, have you ever thought of the reason why they try to learn English? There could be several reasons for learning English. I am going to write about three reasons for learning English. These consist of preparing the exam for entering a college, getting self-satisfaction, and getting enough ability to study abroad.

First of all, most of Korean students study English for the college entrance exam. An English exam for entering a college focuses on reading and listening skills, because it is hard to assess English speaking and writing abilities of about 500 thousands students. Therefore, the students who studied for this type of English tests lack speaking and writing skills. Furthermore, learning English for the entrance exam causes high rates of private English educations. It is burdens to many families. Around us, we can see the affect of learning English for the college entrance test. Even though most students went through formal English education system, they do not speak and write in English fluently. And a private education market for English is getting larger, as time goes by.

Secondly, there are some people who learn English for self-satisfaction. This kind of people has high levels of motivation to study English and enjoy learning English. So they tend to become a proficient English speaker. When I was in an English conversation academic in summer vacation, I met an old person of 60s. He said he learn English for fun and self-satisfaction. Although his English accent was not good, he could speak freely in English. However, I think that it is not common to find out this type of person.

Lastly, some people learn English to get enough ability for studying abroad. Basically, to study abroad, they have to acquire high scores in TOEIC, TOFEL, and other English tests. Not only do they focus on tests, but they try to achieve fluent English speaking and writing skills not to be confused in other countries. In addition, they struggle to study English related to their majors. As a result, this type of people tends to achieve high levels of English abilities. In our department, there are many colleagues to learn English for studying overseas. Their English skills are really good.

As you have read above, there are several reasons for learning English. There could be more reasons. However I think those three are main reasons. Purpose of doing something is very important. It is also same in learning English. Learning English for the college entrance exam do not give high levels of motivation to learners. In my opinion, high levels of motivation for learning English are essential to be a successful English learner. Therefore, I think that if English learners want to acquire English skills successfully, they should try to learn English for self-satisfaction to have high levels of motivation.

Did you ever notice that Koreans put much more time and effort on learning English rather than learning Korean? Average Koreans don’t really study Korean after they are graduated from high school. But they never stop studying English even after they get into universities. In fact, university is not the end of the story. They even keep studying English after they get a job. Because of globalization, chances to use English are increasing dramatically. But still, do all Koreans have to study English so hard just because it is globalized world? I think there are three reasons why Koreans are so eager to master English: job, getting information and bias.

First of all, good English skills are treated as one of essential skill at a job market in Korea. So, being good at English can be a very strong point when you are planning to get a job in Korea. For example, applicants for Korean companies are asked to submit an English test scores with their resume. So, the higher the score is, the more likely you will be hired. In addition, Korean companies are targeting as many countries as they can to sell their products these days. In situation like this, person who can speak English fluently can drive a good bargain, because deals are going to be made in English. And English speakers are also useful in managing branch offices locating in all over the world.

Secondly, by knowing English, we (Koreans) can get information much more easily. Since 1990’s, few countries that speak English as their mother tongue have been a center of the majority of professional fields including medical science, media and other studies. For example, most of cutting-edge scientific technologies and developments are being made by Western countries. And most of them are written in English. It means that we have to get familiar with scientific terminology in English. It will be hard to understand any of these academic updates if we can’t read and understand English well enough. In this respect, English is essential.

As a last reason, Koreans hold a biased view on English. Even though it is impossible to put all the languages in one line, Koreans still considering English as the top of a language. This is because Koreans have tendency to rank languages based on the popularity of language. And obviously, this prejudice accelerates Koreans to learn English. In addition, this bias also made ostentatious thought as well. It is that Koreans equalize English with success. They tend to think mastering English can guarantee a successful life. This is very narrow-minded thinking. But still, bias on English is one of the main reasons making Koreans to learn English.

In conclusion, although many people have their own different reasons for learning English, there are several conclusive reasons why Koreans are so eager to learn English. People are learning English because qualified English test scores are now required for company applicants. This is because companies think English is essential skill in performing a job. Also, nowadays, most of academic achievements are being done in English. So, in order to catch up any latest academic updates, learning English is necessary. And finally, biased view on English is pushing Koreans to learn English. Although it is one of the reasons making Koreans to learn English, it has to be eradicated. We should consider English as one of the communicative tool not as one way to success.

In Korea, learning English has been one of the most hot issue for years. Parents want to teach English their children from when they were young, even before they were born. Moreover, people want to send their babies to a English kindergarten which is much more expensive than other general kindergartens. And more and more parents decide to send their children to study abroad. Then, what will be the reasons of numerous people get wild with enthusiasm about English? There should be abundant benefits by studying English. I'd like to summarize the most essential three reasons for learning English; to get much more professional jobs; to be adapted to the globalized society; to travel and communicate with foreign people.

First of all, profitable occupations motivate people to go crazy about English for basically. In Korea, most of vocations require high English level even those are not related to English. Therefore, many unemployed people are struggling with English tests such as TOEIC, TOEFL or G-TELF etc. Frankly to say that in Korea many people study English for accumulating capital and ascending social status rather than just improving English skill. There are many multinational companies in Korea which provide a mint of money, they want to hire fluent English speakers to promote the efficiency of works. So people desire to master English and to be a fluent English speaker.

Secondly, Korean should study English for live in globalized society. We cannot deny that America is the most powerful and influential country in the world. Not just the US, but most English speaking countries have the great power of influence to other countries in many ways. We can find English everywhere. To live in this world we should learn English. For doing Internet, reading books, newspaper, and magazines, watching TV and even walking down street we can see English everywhere. On the other aspect, some people worry about this phenomenon. They insist that we might lose our own culture identity. But in my opinion we have no doubt on the affect of the Western culture, so we should adapt that atmosphere trying to improve our culture nationally.

For third reason, Koreans learn English for traveling abroad and communicating with foreign people on daily life. If we don't know how to speak English, there are plentiful disadvantages. As I mentioned on the above paragraph, the world is getting smaller and Korea 's economic level is higher, people have many chances to meet foreign people and travel around world. However, most Koreans still afraid of talking with foreign people. Through learning English, we can speak foreign people directly and we can enjoy other cultures too. Moreover, English is national officer language that if we travel in Non-English-speaking country, we can communicate in English even we don't know that country's officer language.

To sum up, Koreans are eager to learn English and teach English to their children for many reasons. On these days, English is not just a mean of communication but also plays a primary role in economically and socially in Korea society. There is no doubt that the English speaking countries are powerful countries and we should grasp the situation of the global situation. There are large numbers of advantages when we get sufficient English ability as I stated above; ; to get much more professional jobs; to be adapted to the globalized society; to travel and communicate with foreign people. Some people, however, worry about the overemphasis of English education. But to adapt in global village and improve Korean's own competitiveness, we should support English education in Korean society.

These days, Students, even babies in Korea are suppressed by their parent's aspiration to make them a good English multi-player. Ordinary people in Korea also learn English in academy and Internet, etc. Even they go to abroad to learn English. As the world have been globalized, these trends become more popular. Why do they learn English? Why are people trying their best to learn English? There are many reasons. What I want to explain is general reasons. They learn English to realize their dream related to English, to enter big company or good university. to get English background.

Firstly, People in Korea learn English to come true their goal related to English. It is very natural and primary reason. For example, I'm a freshman of English Education. When I was a high school student, I had interest in English. So, I joined English Newspaper club in my school in spite of my poor English ability. To write more advanced composition, I studied English harder than other subjects. In the end, I entered a department of English Education in KNU, I'm still learning English and I will learn English forever. Maybe, in the world, there are many people like me. They want to accomplish their goal related to English. So, They may be learning English in this time.

Secondly, People in Korea learn English to enter good universities or big companies. Korean college entrance exam like SAT includes English test. To enter the great university. score in this exam must be high. So, high school students learn English regardless of their interest in English or their future dream. After graduating a university, people have to learn English to get a better job. Many big companies require high score in TOEIC or TOEFL test, speaking ability. As companies are globalized, they need to communicate with other countries to trade more efficiently. For this reason, people who want to apply for big companies try to improve their English ability and learn English continuously.

Thirdly, People in Korea learn English to get a English background. As I wrote above paragraph, world become globalized and westernized. However, from the far past, Korea has preserved own culture and language. In addition, Korea located between China and Japan. In this situation, Korean couldn't have a chance to experience English culture. It is hard to communicate with foreigners without understanding their culture. I read funny story about misunderstanding different culture. Japanese prefer a advertisement that emphasize the product's image to a advertisement that compare rival products. a foreign company that try to sell their product in Japan didn't know these facts. So they advertised that their good is better than other products. Obviously, their selling in Japan was very poor. If the company have understood Japanese culture well, this happening would not occurred. Like this, to win the in the globalized society, people know that English is a necessity and the final goal of learning English is understanding their culture.

I wrote three reasons why Koreans learn English. They may want to accomplish their dream. They may want to get a job. They may want to know other cultures. There will be other reasons to learn English. Anyway, Many English learners have to know why they are learning English to improve their English ability efficiently. It is natural that a person who knows one's goal well will win others who just follow trend. Now, English isn't just foreign language, It's the most powerful language in the world. The number of people who learn English won't decrease, Rather, The demand that want to learn English will increase. In conclusion. Educating English has a bright prospect. English teacher is a worthwhile job. As a student of English Education, I have to learn English more and harder than others.

Have you ever heard of the elder, age of 68, who studies English for his self-satisfaction. He says that there are no special reasons to do that. However, most of people in Korea would say that they have some specific reasons learning English for getting a good score in a variety of English exams, for a livelihood, for living in a foreign country, and so forth. Recently, not only the young but also the elder starting to learn English get more and more. So we need to question why they want to learn English today. Let’s look at the reasons that, I think, are the most crucial.

Firstly, people learn and study English to get a good score in exams. There are so many exams measuring the English ability like Toefl, Toeic, or Teps in Korea. The most important reason to Koreans may be for this. Those are actually the only ways to assess one’s English ability in Korea. Someone getting a high score in exams means he is good at using English. Almost all of students in Korean universities may study it preparing for some exams. Above all, everyone as a student has to take an English exam in schools. Because of the atmosphere so focusing on the result of exams in Korea, the exams themselves are a purpose in studying English.

Secondly, another main reason studying English is utilizing it itself is beneficial for the livelihood. In other words, having a good skill in English gives people the better opportunity to get a job and get promoted in work. For example, many people who want to be an English teacher and to be a translator learn English. Nowadays, most of works need us to get good at using English. It’s the fact that all the systems of our society are more profitable to a person who has a proficiency in English. So many people even including the elders in a work go to a private academy to learn English at their late age of life. If they are good at English, they can have more opportunities to get a better job and to be promoted.

Thirdly, there are a lot of people who want to live in a foreign country. They necessarily have to know about the custom and culture of the country. One of the basic things to do before going abroad is to learn English. Actually, lots of children in Korea learn English in their early stage of age for studying abroad. It’s just one of the preparations before they leave. And also it’s essential to study English to people who want a career abroad. As the globalization is going on and on, people who want to go abroad is more and more. So they have to learn English for a communication.

We have looked through the reasons for learning English in Korea. Actually, it’s difficult to individually find out what are all the reasons of it because all of people would have their own and various reasons. But there are the main reasons for it and I think they are for getting a good score in a variety of English exams, for a livelihood, and for living in a foreign country. Few would say that he, or she, just likes studying English there’s no special reason as I’ve already mentioned in the first paragraph. Obviously, people study and learn English with some reasons and they do because it’s necessary in Korea.

In the last year, Koreans spent over 15trillion won on private whereas cost of Korean education was estimated at 30trillion won. Is it so surprising? This shows what Koreans think that learning English is very important and spend a lot of money. Then, why do people think that they should learn English? There are some main reasons that Korean need to learn English. Beyond English as international language in the age of globalization, they are getting a job, studying and traveling.

First of all, Almost companies need their employees to master English skills. And their English skills have to be tested before entering company by TOEIC, TOFLE, TEPS. English interview, etc. Because when they get in the companies, they will need to contact foreigners and tasks related to English. So learning English is essential for them to get the job that they really want. Have you ever seen children who speak English better than Korean? These children lived in foreign country for many years. And nowadays, there are many English preschools for children. Only a few years ago, English was not a regular subject in an elementary curriculum. But these day, not only children but also many students and others are want to study English and become a fluent English speaker. Also many people are studying for TOEIC, TOEFL and so on. So why do Koreans have much interest in learning English? Maybe, there are thousands of reasons, but I want to mention general reasons in Korea. They might learn English for a college enterance exam, communication and reading skills for an original language edition.

First of all, many students, especially for high school students, study English for entering university. In enterance exam, average score of English subject is highr than any other subjects' average scores. Also, they could have some profits if their English score is good, because of the biggest additional points for that subject. For example, Kyungpook National University gives some additional score on English to applicant. And some of universities want them to write essays after reading some articles written in English. If they couldn't understand what articles mean exactly, they might cannot write good essay. And a few universities have an interviewing time with foreign professors. These days, there are many students who can speak English like foreigner.

Secondly, many people are studying English, because they want or have to read and analyze some materials written in English. We are using many original edition, even if that is not for your major but for your cultural studies. Therefore if you want to study about something deeply, ability to read and understand something in English is required. And also, these days, we have many chance to face a western literature. Of course, there are many books translated into Korea. Today's translation is almost correct, but the best way to understand what writers really mean is reading their books written in their original language. It is very hard work to find right words or phrases in other language that have some sense or feeling, so there is a little gap between original edition and translated edition.

Last, what make people feel that they need to learn English is increasing chances to communicate in English. World is becoming smaller, so you can meet many foreigners. Also the most important thing is that English is commonly used by many other countries. Therefore, when you have conference or have a chance to sign a contract, if you are not good at communicating with others, your business could go wrong way. And not only in business case but also in daily life, sometimes you feel English is required. Because people have an instinct for talking with other people. Almost everywhere are foreigners and you can understand what they are talking about. Or occasionally, they ask you about something. If you are good at speaking in English, it would be very helpful to become a kind person in this situation.

In conclusion, learning other countries' language is very hard, but there are lots of people learning English. And each of them has a variety of important reasons. For high school students, they have to study English hard to enter a good university. Also, to people who are studying about something deeply, there are so many books written in English that they must learn English. And generally speaking, the most common reason is an instinct to communicate with each other. By knowing these reasons, you can improve your English more easily. But the most important thing is that if you study only for your career, learning could be very hard time.

English is every where in Korea! I believe this is not a big word when it comes to regarding how much money and time Korean people are spending on learning English. From a young kid to a senior, it seems that all Korean people are diligently leaning English in their life. Thus it would be very valuable to talk about what reasons are driving Korean people to place a big value on learning English. Obviously, the reasons for learning English must be vary from person to person and situation to situation, however, getting a job; seeking more opportunities, and studying more broadly can be good reasons that might people have.

First of all, getting a job is a good reason why Korean people to learn English. In Korea, all most every job needs a certain level of English ability even though it is not often used in the work. For example, from the public officer exam to a small company’s exam, there is a step for checking English ability. In addition, now it seems that every big company is strengthening this step because Korean companies actively expanding their business to the world. Thus people, especially, young people are studying English for getting a job.

Secondly, the more opportunities are available to a person who has a good English ability. More in detail, for students who have good English skills usually have more chances to study abroad and have volunteer works in international affairs. It can apply to a company as well. An employee who has a good English ability can have more opportunities to go abroad and get a more chances to be promoted. Therefore, people are learning English to have more opportunities in their life.

Last but not least, people are learning English to study and find information more broadly. Along with the advance in internet and air transportation, there has been an exploded increase in exchanging information and relationship world widely. And the most of information is written in English and at most conferences and international meetings, English is the official language. Thus to exchange information and to communicate with world people Korean people are learning English.

So far, I have stated three reasons why Korean people are learning English: getting a job; seeking more opportunities, and studying broadly. I do know that these three reasons cannot demonstrate all Korean people’s reasons to learn English and there must be more complicated and deep reasons vary from person. In my opinion, however, at least the above mentioned three reasons representing well the necessities for learning English among Korean people. In brief, the reasons for learning English can be vary but every person to learn English to achieve their goal and purpose.

Nowadays many people learn and study English in many countries. In our country, a lot of people enroll private English academy for improving their English conversation ability, learn English to prepare for their test such as Toeic and Toefl and to go abroad. I think most Korean people learn English to build up their ability for an ara of globalization, to prepare themselves for their career, and learn for their fulfillment. I'd like to go into these three reasons why Korean people learn English in detail.

First of all, Korean people learn English to build up their English ability for an era of globalization. To survive in a age of globalization, people have to learn language that is predominantly used in every country. English is the very dominant global language. To know and gain other advanced knowledge in foreign countries, people are required to have ability to read and understand resources mostly written or spoken in English. Also to transmit our culture, society, and so on to other countries, we should be able to express them readily. Even in our daily life, when a foreigner asks us for directions on the street, at least we should be able to understand and speak English, without just saying "I DON'T KNOW" in every situation even if we do know about it.

Secondly, most people learn English to prepare themselves for their career. Many students learn English to get a good grade and enter a good University. And in our society, many corporations require applicants' authorized English test scores to know whether he or she has a sufficient English ability or not. So most Korean learners prepare for Toeic or Toefl test to get a good job. And they think that to get a good job is the way of success. So, for their success, they make great efforts to learn English. It is the same thing about me. To be English teacher, I also learn English. Considering my major, English education, I must do it to be good enough to teach students.

Lastly, some people learn English for their fulfillment. By doing this, they enhance their competence for themselves and have a feeling of self-satisfaction. They are kinds of people who want to develop themselves. To give an example, during last summer vacation, I went to private English academy for improving my speaking. In my class, there were many kinds of people ; who is a fashion designer, a student, a housewife and an Oriental doctor. The housewife in my class who seems to be the same age of my mother was really good at English ; speaking, listening, and even grammar. She told me she just learn with no purpose. I thought that she was really a self-motivated person whom I'd ever seen. I think it is the same to the Oriental doctor. After his working, he used to come to the class to learn English. I think those are the people of the many who learn English for their fulfillment.

To sum up, there are many reasons why Korean people learn English. Among many of them, the main three reasons of learning English are to cope with globalized situation, to prepare for their career and for their fulfillment. As thinking about various reasons, it seems that many people do need to learn English for their specific reasons. Todays English is not only as a tool of communication but also an essential and meaningful means to our lives. To learn English, people may have to conceive their reasons for to do it, not just following as others do it. And if they strive to do it hard, they will achieve what they want.

Learning English has become our matter of common, primary concern, not only in korea but also in every country living in 21c. And then think about the reason why we are obsessed with learning English. Even though you will not purpose to go abroad, your proficiency in English may be necessary because English spread all parts of our society and people also effect English-culture so much in their everyday life. As English has become language for common use, one's English ability becomes one of the strongest points in today’s age of globalization and make more chances to approve oneself a international person.

First of all, strengthen international competition. In today's age of globalization every countries competitive with the world and they use English in common. It means that we should use 'English' to meet our country's proper conditions and can not compare with them impartially without English. By learning English, our country's status in the world should be elevated higher both politically and economically.

Secondly, exams that held in all schools also include English. Frankly Korean students may motivate for this reason mainly. As the importance of English has increased sharply, it is natural that educators advocated and learners also did. sometimes this situation leads a lot of problems in korea like ;the excessive cost of private English education, pros and cons about teaching all subject in English etc. But when put it the other way, above-mentioned issues show us how much society emphasizes English education.

Lastly, If you had great scores in TOEIC or TOEFL, you can draw up resumes more confidently and may have more chance to stand out, or even promote after you get a job. There are many opportunities to contact with foreign traders or customers, and then one's English ability make him be paid better than those who are not good at English. So I think Koreans are crazy about learning English in order to secure their position.

Perhaps people who struggled to improve one's English ability must question about the reason why I have to study English. And the answer for that question is simple. The importance of English is beyond our recognition and English has been item of indispensable rather than item of selectable. The reason why Koreans spend their time, money learning English summarize up the attitude of today's international society asking us to qualified to deal with foreigners. So as previously stated, English is important and necessary, needless to say, for every Koreans to communicate and get along with.
