Below you will find an example (categorization-style) essay explaining some of the essential things needed in good academic essays. Below that you will see a link to a Powerpoint presentation I have used with my university classes going through the example essay step by step, and outlining some of the common error problems I have seen as a writing teacher over the years.

I hope you find these materials helpful!

Read the writing topic below and the essay that follows it.

What are the essential skills required to write good academic essays in English?

Academic essay writing is an important skill for almost all people engaged in university level study. It is especially important for students who are pursuing advanced English majors. However, good essay writing skills appear to be significantly difficult for many students to master. One way to make essay writing easier to understand and approach is to break it down into different fundamental skills. For the purposes of this essay, I would like to present topic development, organization and progression, language use, and writing mechanics as the essential skills required to write good academic essays in English.

First of all, writers need to know how to present and develop a general or specific topic. They need to state their topic clearly, and also clarify how they intend to break it down into smaller, interrelated ideas. Breaking a topic down in this way is a good way to explore it from different angles and present a comprehensive and convincing approach. Looking at the example of this essay, you will see that I am approaching the general topic of essential skills required to write academic essays in English by presenting the sub-themes of topic development, organization and progression, language use, and writing mechanics. However, each of these sub-topics also needs to be developed and supported. After stating each as a topic sentence, I can provide additional details to explain them, and support them with clear examples. In fact, just by reading over this paragraph again, you will see that I have done exactly those things for the main idea of topic development: I have explained what the idea means and given examples of it in use.

Secondly, good essays need to exhibit careful organization and clear progression from one idea or argument to the next. By this I mean that each part of the essay should have a specific focus that is clearly different from the parts that come before and after it. The first paragraph of this essay introduces the general topic and how I intend to break it down. The second paragraph explains the idea of topic development, while this – the third paragraph – deals with organization and progression. In the same way, the following paragraphs will have different foci. The idea of progression is also very important. The essay needs to flow through a logical and convincing pattern of introducing the topic, presenting a body of ideas in support of that topic, and a clear conclusion to wrap up the ideas and pass on final unified thoughts to the reader.

In addition to topic development and organization/progression, a good essay in English does of course need to use good language. I use the broad term language to refer to things like word and sentence choice, and grammatical accuracy and effectiveness. For example, we need to use words and terms to capture our ideas clearly. It is important to use a variety of accurate sentence models to avoid boring the reader with repetition, or else confusing them with sentences that are either too drawn out or too crowded with detail. In addition, language use can affect the reader of an essay in other ways. Poor or very simple grammar could result in the reader not respecting the writer’s general intelligence or becoming distracted from the writer’s central message. For example, it can be hard to respect a teacher’s recommendations about the best ways to learn English if these ideas are presented in an essay full of grammatical mistakes and/or devoid of any advanced vocabulary or expressions.

Last but certainly not least, good essays require careful mechanics. These are the more technical aspects of the way words and sentences actually appear on the page, but they are fundamentally important. Mechanics can cover things at “whole text” level (like the ability to clearly separate paragraphs within the text); paragraph level (capitalization and periods to indicate separate sentences); sentence level (commas, dashes, brackets or semi-colons to link or extend ideas); or even word level (for example apostrophes and basic spelling). Clearly these “mechanical” aspects of written language have a major impact on how easy it is to read, and how logically ideas appear to be expressed and supported. An essay without clear line breaks, punctuation or accurate spelling can be very much like trying to negotiate a complex network of streets that have no lanes indicated, no arrows, no stop signs, nor even street names!

In conclusion, it would be fair to say that good essay writing in English is a complex skill that can be broken down into a variety of equally important considerations. As writers, we need to be able to present and develop topics in ways that makes them thorough and convincing. We also need to organize our ideas clearly and present them in a progressive fashion. Moreover, it is important to apply language accurately, efficiently, and effectively to convey our written messages. Finally, we need to master the mechanics of writing at text, paragraph, sentence and word level to make reading smooth and easy for our readers. By paying careful attention to each of these aspects, students of English can ensure they express themselves effectively through the medium of academic essays.

As you saw, I was depressed when I couldn't answer any question fluently in the today's class!
I think you are totally right. When I try to speak English, I tend to be under pressure to use sophisticated and difficult expressions. I will try to speak English more easily. Failure is the mother of success~:)

I was happy to find this thread. It is attached PPT file for basic essay that is similar to TOEIC SPEAKING last question type. But I think this file has problem. I can't open this. The error message says that it cannot be opened because something is absent. Would you cheak this file?

Maybe that problem is made just in my computer;; Upper member seems to have no problem..

-akshay

Hi akshay,

There is nothing wrong with the file - it will probably have something to do with your computer and its settings. Reposting the file will not change anything, unfortunately.

Can you try downloading it on another computer?

Best wishes,

 ~ Jason

Hi Jason!
How kind you are!!
As it is very demanding for me to take a note during the class, this file and post is a big help for me. And it also gives me a chance to take up some parts that I missed and couldn't understand in the lecture. Thak you very much^^*

Oh, but unforunately, now I came to know that I failed to download this ppt file. The warning message says that there are some missing parts in that file so that I can't open it. I tried to download in another computer but failed, either. Well, maybe I have to try it in school computer lab. Anyway Thank you again and I hope I can download it successfully^^

Hello Jason, I am Sangwook. :-)

I am ashamed of myself to say that I forgot to read this article for a long time. Now I read all the content you wrote. It would be very helpful. Even if our semester is over, I will try to write a number of articles on the base of this valuable information. Thank you, sir.

Hi, Jason.

I'm also very ashamed because I didn't read this article during attending writing class. It is really what I wanted to read whenever I wrote English essays. I didn't know how to develop my opinion properly and correct my essay. I'm very sorry not to pay attention to individual posts. At the first time when you graded my essay, I got very depressed because of low grade. If I had read this article before, I might have developed my English writing skills better. I don't know there is great improvement of my writing skills. (Actually, I really hope that you think my English ability has improved, even a little.) Anyway, this article will be helpful when I write other English essays. I keep this article as text file and will read it whenever I have to remind what I have to keep in mind during writing English essays.

Thank you, Jason!

Hi, Mr.Renshaw!

I think if I become competent with English writing, there should be not only numerous practices but there should be also the basic knowlege or instruction. Even though you leave us, I will practice by myself with this considerate item. Thank you.

Hey Jason
I read somewhere that in the introduction, we must not make a summary of the entire passage. This may lead to correcter losing the interest in the passage as he has already got the idea what's in the essay. Is it true? I have been following your method, but just today I came across this.

Yes, that is true. This is a model for a categorization essay, so it's a little different. Read the notes in the writing lab forum about how to write good introductions for TOEFL essays and you should be able to see the difference.
