Attached you see will see a series of whiteboard shots from some of my recent writing lectures concerning brainstorming and planning skills for categorization-style essays.

These shots show the following general process:

1) Writing your given topic out carefully to ensure you understand it and don't miss important details

2) Starting a "visual" brainstorm with your central broad topic and some main ideas distributed around it

3) Adding quick details to each of the main ideas around your topic

4) Generating quick ideas for a "hook" at the start of your introduction, and a finishing thought to round out your conclusion

5) Converting your bubble map brainstorm into an organized outline (plan)

There is also a second example topic shown, with a completed bubble map relevant to that particular topic. It also demonstrates how the brainstorm process allows us to incorporate similar ideas together, or discard those ideas we feel aren't as essential or worthwhile to write about.

I hope the images help you and give you some ideas. Feel free to ask any questions you like relevant to these topics and the processes shown!

Best wishes,

~ Jason

Before I learned this way, I did not write an essay very well. However, I can improve my writing skills and my essay by using this after I learned this good tip. Thank you Jason for teaching us a good way to start an essay!

It's been so long that I have learned this way of writing. Maybe it was the first or second class, I guess. Your tip was very useful to me as it was hard for me to make my thoughts more categorized. It helped me a lot to write my esaay more clearly and neatly. I also liked "hook" and "conclusion" box as I could sum up my ideas looking through my main ideas and examples. Make brainstorming in visualized way is very effective way for putting my ideas into order. Thanks again :)

I read many students' essay for few days and comment from them as a feedback. It is time to say good bye everyone because our semester was over and vacation already come! In this picture, the content that we learn from our professor reminds me of the point starting the composition class. When I started my class, that was the first thing we should do as we write an essay, "Mind map". Although I didn't do it every time I wrote, it was really helpful for me to start to learn how to divide the paragraphs and start to write an essay.

I feel really new as I saw it again and I want to go back to that time!! I really miss that time.

I think it is one of many good ways to collect ideas in one's mind. At first I learned this way, I wasn't accustomed to it, and it seemed inefficient. However, after some practice, I know it is a really good way. By doing like that, I could collect really many ideas, which could've not been reminded.
