Stiletto sprint

Sept. 2 - Hundreds of women - and a few men - turned up in heels and hot pants for a short but ungainly race in Australia.

More than 260 women dashed across the 80-metre distance, though some fell on the pavement and others ended up walking to the finish line.

Benet Allen reports.

Innocent ~ Vocabulary Check:

"on your marks" / take part (in) / high-heeled / race / heel(s) / totter(ing) / stiletto(s) / ridiculous / marathon / wobble / professional / hurdler / sprint / competitor / camaraderie / inappropriately / shod / "putting the boot in(to)"

Surprised ~ Possible Discussion Topics:

[For women]: Do you often wear high heels? Do you think you could run fast for 80 meters to win a race wearing stilettos?

[For men]: The article mentions that "the odd gentleman" also took part in the race. Would you run in a high heels race as a fun joke?

[For all]: What do you think of this race? Is it good fun and humor, or just plain silly? How do you think the reporter feels about the race (going by his tone and use of vocabulary)?

Hi everyone,

When I was living in Europe, I would wear high heels all the time; even my boots in winter were high heels. But, in California I rarely wear them, because most people wear flip-flops or sneakers here; so I started wearing the same kind of shoes. I have to say that my feet are thanking me for that!

I think I would be able to run 80 meters with stilettos, but I couldn't tell if I would win the race. However, I am very competitive! Therefore, I would do my best to win.

I think the race is fun! Even as grown-ups, we need to keep the child in us alive with such silly activities.
I believe, the reporter feels the race is ridiculous and silly but, it is part of the fun.

[For women]: Do you often wear high heels? Do you think you could run fast for 80 meters to win a race wearing stilettos?

- I often wear high heels. Since my height is not tall enough, I wear them mostly. And I definitely think I can run fast for more than 80 meters. When I worked at the broadcasting station, I had to hand in the reports on time. If I couldn't, I had to do the same work twice! When I finished my work in the dorm, it was 4:50pm. I had to hand in those by 5:00pm, or I would get 'DO IT AGAIN' mark. So I ran as fast as I could, wearing heels. (I only had heels at dorm.) And I could get to the Broadcasting Station in Auditourium in 10mins (from the girls' dorm). if you're in a hurry, whatever you wear, you can run fast! :P

- This sort of silly race I think. It's funny and humorous, but doesn't look good for health. Doctors usually say that we need to stop wearing heels for knees and ankles. Also I think the reporter feels this race is ridiculous. Actually he mentioned that word.

I find the game kinda absurd since while watching the video I can't help imagining myself doing that kind of stuff. Although, I have experienced being on that shoes too, still, I think it isn't good for the health. Based on the studies and experiences that I've learned they said that in the long use of high heels, it would eventually contribute to some pain that one would experience later in her olden days plus the inevitable attacks of old-age arthritis. This I don't find fun at all. Also, looking at the race it seems that the race track is full of eager contestants who wanted to outrun anyone, which I think is quite susceptible to inadvertent accidents, which might lead anyone having sprains, or worse twisted ankle (ouch).

I never wear high heels, i feel as if i am limited and bounded. Usually i like to wear moccasins or sandals on work or study but not stilettos.
stilettos, for me, are for parties, receptions occasions alike

I always wear high heels. I seldom wear sneakers, so I have just one shoes.
But I have various kind of high heels including 3cm, 5cm, even 7cm.
I think the win in a race wearing stilettos depends on what kind of shoes I wear. The more the stilettos is expensive, the more I feel comfortable. So It can be helpful to win easily. The more the stilettos' hill is high, The more I feel uncomfortable. So It can be difficult to win.
Finally If I was given to expensive and lowest heel ones, I would be confident that I will be winner.

This race looks very fun, humor and interesting. I know it's not goot for health and has a dangerous part such as falling down. But there are even riskier events in the world. When I read about this topic at first it's enough to provoke my curiosity as a woman who enjoys wearing high heels. I really want to take part in the race!:)

I'm really happy to meet a topic like this . I love wearing high heels, especially stilleto heel that makes me look taller and slender, whatever. I'm not a kind of person who is thin and tall. So I have to do what I can do. I have no choice but wearing heelss. And this is why many women love it. Anyway, The possiblity that I race wearing stilettos is very low but If I do, I think I can do it. Because I have a few experiences whever I'm late for school  or meeting, I couldn't help but run wearing stiletttos.

As sankang referred above, comfort of shoes often depends on how much they are. It would be better for winning If I were given to expensive heels(But It's not always what happened). But It is the most desirable that not joining the race I think.

I never wear high heels. I want to wear high heels. But, I am rather tall considering I'm a korean girl. So, I always wear snickers or flat shoes. Because I'm not accustomed to wear high heels, I can't run as fast as women in the video did. However, I want to participate the race just fun. Although there are many dangers to hurt during the race, I think it's just event to enjoy. People who participate in the race are volunteers. They know the dangers well. Actually, in video clip, women are enjoying the race. But, I think, the reporter in this video think this race is ridiculous. (In fact, I can't understand reporter's speaking exactly. T.T) Why don't the reporter and some people regard this event as just homorous party?

High heel.. Well.. I am not friendly with high heel(I am man.. And I am taller than Korean man's average height so I don't use shoes with high insole..) But I saw many girls who are suffering by the pain when they are wearing high heel.. So, what I want to say is.. does that have a meaning?

1)
I can't do this. For me, I am not able to stay even in the driving bus wearing high heels. However,High heels are a prerogative for women.so,I'll walk comfortably as if I enjoy fresh upper-air with the high heels

2) I think the reporter thought that is weird and useless in many ways.
But,this is a kind of advertisement for cosmetic things or something to help women's leg reshape, I guess. So, it is not a silly thing but a creative announce for those who saw this.

Wow! It was a really funny and interesting video! At first I thought it would be the commercial ad which released during the Bejing Olympics.

Anyway my guess was wrong but it was interesting so much!!

[For women]I sometimes wear high heels, because they cover my physical weak point. Also they make women those who wear them look taller and slender. That's why many women love to wear them. So in this point, I quite agree with Sinji Kim. Also I'm sure I could run fast for 80m race wearing high heels but it would be difficult to run in stilettos. Sometimes I have to run as fast as possible even though I put on high heels. For example, I have to run to cross the road and make it on time. However since stilettos have narrow heels, it would be very hard to run with them.

[For all]I think it is quite unusual and silly. I can't deny it is interesting and funny, however, as San Kang said, it is bad for women's health. Wearing High heels affects to wearer's back and spine badly. Therefore it is more harmful to women to run in high heels. I think the reporter felt similar to me.
