Explain your top tips for improving English writing skills.

By Minjung Beak, Eunji Seo, Jeongah Han, Jungeun Sin and Seungug Lee(editor)

I believe improving English writing skill is the hardest job in terms of improving your English skills; reading, speaking and listening. Individually, those skills also the hardest job to me. Compared to other English abilities of me, I am lack of writing skill. When I do writing tasks, I am struggled with and felt overwhelmed. For this point, I started wondering how to work this problem out and way is the best to improve myself and which material is the most suitable to do this. I have asked these good questions to a number of English teachers and the answer is that memorizing valuable expressions, reading lots of books and practice.

First of all, memorizing some valuable expressions after reading a book is the best way to improve English skill. Since writing skills demand that writers make sentences, we need to know a lot of expressions. If we know and use lots of expressions from books in English, we can improve English writing skills. When I was high school students, my writing teacher told me that copy one paragraph everyday to improve writing skill. That was really effective. I suggest you to copy one paragraph written in English every day. It may be hard work but if you do it constantly, you can memorize many valuable expressions.

Now, guess. Why did English teachers advise to read the books in English? You already know that everybody’s writing style is different from others through reading books written in Korean. While reading books, you could obtain some useful phrases and idioms. Also you could learn something from the authors; how they continued the story, how they used synonyms suitably. Also published books already have been checked and edited through long time and effort, not always but there is almost no mistake. Therefore you could get much information from reading books.

Finally, the only thing left is practice. There is a proverb which says “practice makes perfect”. But you don’t need to think practice as difficult and boring work. Just enjoy writing. Diary, movie review, e-mail to friends and so on. Write anything and your writing skills will be improved. It will give you confidence that you can also write just like others. Actually, I have many chances to write in English in these days. At first, I felt that it’s very annoying and depressing but the more I write, the more I feel confident. I know that my English writing still contains many mistakes and sometimes it doesn’t make any sense but those will be fixed if I keep trying.

Most of the English learners are having a hard time in English writing. That’s not just because writing is difficult, but they are not used to writing in English. So even though I suggested some tips for you to improve your own writing skills, it’s the most important to write a lot by yourself and make yourself feel English writing as easy work. If you think about it affirmatively, there is nothing like English writing. The more you try, the more you achieve. It depends on you. Just keep trying with my three suggestions, and your skill must be improved. Good luck!

Hello seungug? How are you?

Your essay is encouraging and contains useful and practical tips to improve our writing skills. As this semester is my first time to practice writing in Ehglish, I have got though so hard times. It would be much better if I knew these tips earlier! Your tips are very pratical, so I'll put them into action! You emphasizes the importance of trying to do and I absolutely agree with that. One of the biggest problems for students is I think they know what to do and how to do but they don't actually make use of it. Also, I can't deny that I'm one of them too. However, I love your tips a lot, so I really want to apply to myself! Thank you for nice essay!

Hi Seungug! How was your weekend? Did you study a lot? :)
I totally agree with the idea, which was indicated in the introduction part, that improving writing skill is the hardest one among other skills like speaking, reading and listening. That's because writing skill not only requires plentiful expressions but also requires the ability to organize someone's idea. In this point of view, I liked the way you build up your idea, in terms of expression part and amplifying someone's knowledge. However, I think your point of view and mine are a little bit different regarding the effect of reading a lot of books written in English. Of course I admit that the difference of writing style and lot of information can give us the chance to improve our writing skill, I think there is something more than just obtaining some "skill". I think through reading a lot of books, people can develop their ability to think broadely and deeply, which are essential part when it comes to writing. What do you think of this idea? Do you agree? I want to listen to your idea :) Anyway, thank you for reading my feedback!

Hi, everyone!
I didn’t know that you guys replied my essay. Thank you for all of your advice and complements. Answering to your question, Haeyoon, I didn’t do much study yet. I know that I have to do but I don’t think I’m ever going to do. How about you?
I always feel that the ideas of my essay are a little too fundamental. I think I should come up with better and more creative ideas. Would you give me advice for that?
Thank you again for reading my essay.

Hi~~seungug~~

I enjoyed reading your essay. Your essay was easy to follow.

I agree with your first idea; memorizing some good expressions from book we read. I think it is a good idea even though it can make a bad effect on our creativity. I like that you used your own experience as an example. It made your essay more interesting to read. Also I like your conclusion part. I felt that you are talking directly to me.

Overall your essay is well written. Thank you for sharing your idea with us.
Good job!!

Hi!

I have really serious problem in writing. Compared with my friends, I feel I'm very poor at writing an essay. There are several problems. First, I always write essays with same pattern. It's a kind of habit, I think. However, if the habit is bad, one should correct it, but it was very difficult for me to do that. Also, I feel difficulty in using proper conjuctions and I always use the same conjuctions like "However, Therefore, In addition to". I want to use more various conjuctions.

As you mentioned in this essay, I should read various writers' writing because their writing style must be different with each other and I'm certain that I can learn from them. On this vacation, I should improve my writing skills to use those methods mentioned above!!!

Now, guess. Why did English teachers advise to read the books in English? You already know that everybody’s writing style is different from others through reading books written in Korean. While reading books, you could obtain some useful phrases and idioms. Also you could learn something from the authors; how they continued the story, how they used synonyms suitably. Hey, Seungug!

It was interesting to read your essay. Even though the essay was written by four people, it is really well organized. In addition, all the three suggestions are good. However, I found some grammatical mistakes.

I am struggled with and felt overwhelmed.(->There must be a noun next to 'with')

Why did English teachers advise to read the books in English?(->Why did English teachers advise to read a lot of books written in English?)

I started wondering how to work this problem out and way is the best to improve myself and which material is the most suitable to do this.(-> I started wondering how to work this problem out, which way is the best to improve myself, and which material is the most suitable to do this.)

When I was high school students, my writing teacher told me that copy one paragraph everyday to improve writing skill.(-> When I was high school students, my writing teacher told me to copy one paragraph everyday to improve writing skill.)

Except for these mistakes, your essay is totally great.

Thank you for your effort and the great essay.

Hey, seungug

While I reading, I felt interested because I really interested in improving English-writing skill. Fundamentally, in learning a language, speaking and listenings are natually achieved but reading and writing skills are relatively hard to get. When it comes to learning a language, good wrtiing skill is difficult to achieve because this requires comprehensive development on all parts of the language. I think your three ideas would be really effective ways to enhance someone's writing abiltiy. Especially, I was really impressed with your second part. Of course I know reading many books is helpful for improving English-writing skill but I didn't think much about its benefits with such consideration. This gave me an chance to look back and think once again about what's important in reading books.

I also like your conclusion. It's true that to achieve some goals, we should do our best and keep trying. But if we have strong interest in doing some works ,not just for only their goals, it would be much easier to achieve them.
Thanks for sharing your good ideas with us!

Hi, Seungug
Thank you for your useful essay for learning writing skills. I memorized valuable expressions a few months ago, but it was really difficult for me to memorize. As I read the books, the expressions which I should memorize are more than I respected. Therefore I gave up that way. But in this semester, I will try to do your tips for improving writing skills.

Hi seunguglee!

How to improve our English writing skills. Memorizing some valuable expressions, reading many books, and practicing writing. Especially, I liked the second idea. As you said, just reading helps us enhance our writing skills. Last year, I studied English for Toefl. At that time, I didn't know what to do about writing. According to my acquintance, I read, read and read a book. What happened? I got a quite good score. It really worked.

Thank you for the tips.

Have a nice vacation.

Hi, Seungu

Your essay is really helpful for me. As you write above, in my opinion, writing is the most difficult part in English studying. Reading a book is one of the most important part in every subjects. Moreover, to improve English writing skill, you should improve Korean writing skill, too. I strongly agree with your third supporting idea. There is no use when you do not utilize and practice your knowledge. Your essay is well organized and it's easy to read ! Well done

Good luck :D

Hello Seungug !
I think it has been a long time no see you ~
I liked your essay because your essay gave me a lot of tips of writing English writing. I really have trouble with writing, and I really think first body's main idea is really important. I'm really bad at grammar so I would think more useful if you mentioned about it, but it's a good job still. Keep it up and I hope you to enjoy your vacation ^^

Hi~ there

Yes, it is really important for students to ask teachers what they can not understand directly, because the memory of the human being is well influenced by direct stimuli.

In my experience of high school, I always ask math my teacher a lot of difficult question that I can not understand. Sometimes the teacher could not solve those directly, however, after he study the questions a lot, and explain to me. These explanations sometimes strike me unconsciously.

So, students have to ask teachers in this situation.

Hi, seungug!

How have you been? I’m quite fine! Do you enjoy exciting vacation?

Anyway, I was impressed with your efforts. (Exactly speaking, you and your colleagues’ efforts. Hehe.) You did a good job as an editor of this collaborative essay. Especially, in your introduction, you mentioned your personal experience and feelings about writing. It makes me agree with your opinion more because I felt same of yours when I wrote English essay. Overall, this essay is well organized and categorized. Each paragraph has not only equal length but also reasonable supporting sentences.

Well, you did a good job. Keep going! ^^

Have a nice vacation~

See you~
