China baby milk scare scandal

Sept. 20 - Chinese officials have ordered widespread checks on dairy products and a recall of tainted items after thousands of babies became ill.

With four deaths and thousands of babies suffering the ill effects of contaminated milk, the Chinese government has announced that all affected children will be given free check-ups and treatment.

It has also made calls to ensure there's sufficient screening in remote areas.

It comes as Malaysia joined Singapore in banning all Chinese milk imports.

Liz Kennedy reports.

Hello, Jason

I am really worried about this Issue. We are facing melamine panic! Actually, I had been drinking huge amount of milk and snack this summer when I was in Chain for about 21days. I think my body not safe anymore, I am not allow to give blood as I have experience of staying England over 1 month which means I might might have potential of crazy cow diease. And now, I might might might be dead.! I want to live the world where I dont need to worry about having food. Jason. Don't you?

Sincerly,

Minjung

Hi Minjung,

Yes - I know what you mean! I am also a big consumer of flavored milk products (especially those cafe ole style coffee drinks ~ I'm addicted to them!) and this report frightened me when I later heard that a huge number of Korean milk/cream products use Chinese milk powders.

My wife and I became particularly concerned because our second baby is due in December. We usually used milk powder from New Zealand for our first baby, but now I hear even those products could be using Chinese milk powder! While we can be careful with which products we choose for our new baby, what about the first week or so in the hospital? Can we be sure the hospital will be using safe powder products?

It's quite terrifying, really. This and the recent scare with toxic chemicals on the toys produced in China...

As for mad cow disease, I have to admit Koreans are way too paranoid about this issue. Is that really true that if you stay in England for more than a month the Korean health authorities are concerned you could be carrying mad cow disease? That's getting a little ridiculous, I must say...

Nice to see your comment here, Minjung!

~ Jason

Hi everyone,

If I have little children I would be very concerned with this issue. An adult can stop consuming milk or its derivative products, but babies and little children need milk. It is not the first time I heard problems coming from China in the manufacturing of different products. USA has withdrawn toys, flip-flop, etc to mention some of them. It was always because of the use of toxic substances in the production of those items. Several children were affected by toxic chemicals and many of them had to be hospitalized. I would say that to be irresponsible with milk is inconceivable. Watching the news, observing those little children and their anxious parents, and making eternal lines to get some help for their precious children, made me feel so sorry for all of them. At least, I am please the authorities took immediate actions to control the situation even in remote countryside.
I hope you and your wife may find the safety milk for your loved ones.
Best wishes,

Buenosaires.
