Question 11-13 (of 15):

Reading Text

Inductive and deductive reasoning are two polar aspects of the generalization process. In the case of inductive reasoning, one stores a number of specific instances and induces a general law or rule or conclusion that governs or subsumes the specific instances. Deductive reasoning is a movement from a generalization to specific instances: specific subsumed facts are inferred or deduced from a general principle. Second language learning in the "field"(natural, untutored language learning), as well as first language learning, involves a largely inductive process, in which learners must infer certain rules and meanings from all the data around them.

Classroom learning tends to rely more than it should on deductive reasoning. Traditional-especially Grammar Translation-methods have overemphasized the use of deductive reasoning in language teaching. While it may be appropriate at times to articulate a rule and then proceed to its instances, most of the evidence in communicative second language learning points to the superiority of an inductive approach to rules and generalizations.

(Brown, 2007: 104~105)

This text will be visible for 90 seconds...

Preparation time
You now have 30 more seconds to add any more notes based on what you can remember from the reading passage. Question 11 will automatically appear on your screen after 30 seconds

Part F : Provide a language teaching solution

Directions
In this part of the test, you will be listening to the dialogue related with the secondary school classroom problem between two colleagues. And you will be asked to suggest a solution about the problem.
You may take notes while you listen to the problem. You will then have 30 seconds to prepare, and 60 seconds to speak.
In your response, be sure to
- show that you recognize the problem, and
- propose a way of dealing with the problem

Question 14(of 15):
One of your teaching colleagues has approached you for advice. Listen to what he has to say:

-Script : Excuse me. Do you have some time to confer with me about the classroom problem? If it’s ok, I want to tell you about my classroom problem. I found my limits as an English teacher, especially when I taught listening. It is so hard to improve their listening ability. In every listening class, I prepared practical and exciting content. But students seem that they are never interested in English listening. They showed me some strange behaviors like yawn or napping to express their boring. Actually, I don’t have any idea to make them progressive leader in listening, although I tried in many ways. I had listening time in every class, prepared famous and funny listening test, got them dictation, and showed them easy and popular movies. But it’s not working. In spite of my best, there are still so many students that even though they are good students who get high score in English, they hardly catch the sentence by listening. And weak students about English even don’t try to listen. I don’t know why it happens. If you tell me any of your opinions, I will be really appreciate your sharing.

Record your response to this teaching colleague. Try to find a language teaching solution for his problem.

Finishing the group work

Before I took this task, I just followed the questions made by person who makes them for an examination. So I didn’t know and care purposes and directions of given questions. Now, through this work, I get to know the reason why the question is and which ability I can show in the answer. It is very useful to answer the given questions and make the questions for students. Through them, I can understand questions more deeply than before.

Questions 5~7 are based on my experience that I’d had when I was in secondary school. At that time, I was so confused using rise and raise, and be going to and will. Most students have had problems with learning vocabulary.

My reflection after finishing the group work :

In case of the Question 8 and Question 9, these are "real" materials from my home tutoring students.
For Question 8, the reason why I chose this kind of issue is that this seems the secondary school students' one of the common complaints. I've heard that my student, Jihee, complained the school teachers are likely to force to obey too many absurd school rules - as she thinks - regarding hairstyle, school uniform, even shoes. But, when I made her write about this interesting issue, she was very difficult to express her opinion in English. Maybe, because, I think, she is only two-grade secondary school student. It is very funny that her writing is contrary to her true opinion, that is she doesn't want to obey the school rules.
About Question 9, I think many students including secondary students have experienced "introducing myself or my family". So I want to find more interesting and practical issue, and I finally decided this topic. At first, Minjae, my real home tutoring student, was very hard to make a speech, but, as time goes by and his speech is recorded over and over again, he did that well more and more. It was fun time to me and Minjae.
For Question 10, I think some students are likely to really hate learning English grammar and even ask why we have to study English grammar. These days, speaking and listening English seem more important than reading exactly and using English grammar, but I think English grammar is also important so that we speak and read English better and more exactly. So I made this situation.
Totally, this project is very interesting and meaningful for me.
Thank you for reading my epilogue.

My reflection after finishing the group work :

I took charge of section E, teaching methodology. I think inductive and deductive teaching is very important for teachers as well as integrated skills in the last test. As many people know, this is one of the important and basic teaching methods in language learning. In English teaching methodology class, we discussed which teaching method is better for second language teaching. There is not any conclusion. But I think you should be thinking about this matter if you are future teacher. I believe future teachers should know this two methodology quite well and make their own opinion.

My reflection after finishing the group work :

 1. part F : The nature of the language is conversation. When we acquire mother tongue, the beginning of the acquirement is only listening. Therefore listening has to be a basic and most important step when we learn English. However in Korea, listening is neglected because teaching and improving is so difficult. We thought we have to change these concepts from teachers. It is the reason that we choose our contents in part F.

2. part G : Changing the prime government, the biggest revolution is taking place in English education. Especially practical English education is emphasized. They suggest “Immersion education” to actualize practical English education and it is hot issue in every subject. We thought, professional has to have proper and definite opinion. It is the reason that we choose our contents in part G.
