No one will disagree on the statement that teaching practical English is very important. However, I think practical English teaching is more important than that. Imagine the situation that teachers try to teach practical English, but they don't have enough time for preparin the class or don't know how to make students get involved in it. However good the content maybe, if he/she don't know how to deal with the whole process of class, it would be not that successful. So, teachers have to pay attention not only to the content but also the way they running and preparing their classes. In this situation, we - preliminary teachers- should think about practical English teaching, and this can be strenghtened by these three aspects; lessening the lesson planning time, using effective learning materials and formats; adopting practical activities.
First of all, to lessen the time for planning, teachers have to have in their mind the"efficiency" aspect . Then how to maximize the efficiency when they are preparing? I think categorizing and grouping some methodologies(types of teahing) will be the answer for that question. By making some several templates that you can apply to the class, you don't have to worry about "How am I going to run next class?" problems. If you make several formats that you think effective, all you have to do when you prepare the class is just choosing one of the templates and changing the content. This will improve your time management skill because you don't have to create whole things in every class. In addition, if you make your own portfolios according to the grade or level, it will be a good assistant for you because you can get quick reference from it. Here, it would be great if you make your portfolio which contains the brief self-assessment as Jason showed us in previous class. By looking through those comments, you can get some tips easily and prepare class materials quickly. However, it will be hard for you because there is some limitation on making those portfolios by yourself. So, it will be great if English teachers share their methodologies or other various kinds of materials(I will talk about it in the next paragraph). By doing that, they can make "English pool" and they can use it easily and effectively as those enlisted things are already proved to be successful.
Moreover, using effective learning materials also can not be overlooked. As students' interests and fluency of English are vary from person to person, the content which can attract students depends on individual. However, generally, middle school students like lyrics and short stories whereas highschool students like news about celebrities or famous sports stars. What I want to say is not just a content of the material, but the format of the content. I mean how to teach those materials is more important. Considering the principle that providing some challenges which students can manage to do motivates them to participate actively in the class, quizzes or puzzles are the most effective way to draw their attention. I mean that if teachers find some good materials that are related to the class that he/she are preparing, they can adopt it and make some questions based on them. Students will be interested in solving the problems which teachers provide so they can learn language actively. While you are making those questions, as I mentioned above, if you make a "English pool", it will be a big help for your future as well.
Finally, we have to think about adopting some practical activities. This "practical activites" means too vague, so I wil pick just one. I think pair work or group work is the most practical activity. As most students can concentrate easily when they compete with their classmates, pair work or group work would be the perfect form when they're doing some tasks. Also, if you handle the class like this, you don't have to direct all the students in your class. This enables you to drop by each "group", not an every single student. It's much ore time saving and you would feel that students are undercontrolled by you as you can manage 30-40 students by just 5-6 groups. As handling those big class might be a challenging for teachers, just a feeling that you can control the class could make you confident, which will lead you to be more professional.
Last week, I went to the Sangwon Middleschool, where my seniors took a test for teacher's exam. When I was there, I came to realize that I have to be there, taking an exam for being a teacher in about 3 years. After that moment, those words like "teaching" and "teacher" feel very close to me. I completely agree with Jason's advice that there is no magical power that make us great teacher in a day. I think I have to build up my own teaching principles or teaching methodologies from now on so that I can be a great teacher whom I want to be.
