Hyun, Kim-Website reviews.

I read an essay of my class mate Kang san by chance. It was about the effective methods of studying English. One of them was using the website, www.hackers.co.kr. Of course, I have seen the Internet sites containing beneficial materials for free, but this web site is being managed by a private enterprise. A lot of materials were provided by active instructors, not laymen. Also they are all free as well. So I place great trust in this web site, and now I am going to show the most valuable parts of the Hacker, which are the Everyday Study, Lectures for free, and sharing materials.

Firstly, I start the day with the Everyday Study which contains a couple of questions which are in the form of TOEIC and TEPS tests. While I solving those questions, I can naturally practice my English skills, such as checking grammar, vocabulary, and listening. It takes around 10 minutes to solve all questions, which is not a burden at all to everyone. It helps me to maintain a sense of English.

Secondly, there are lots of free lectures. Lectures of active instructors are posted. If you do not have the text for the lecture, you do not have to worry about it. They post the lecture with the text and all you need is just follow them the way they lead. These lectures which are designed for next TOEIC and TEPS tests are useful for people who are going to take these test. Someone says that he originally got an around 700 point has but after he study with the web site he got a 930 point at TOEIC. How about you? Why don’t you start studying?

Lastly, there are various useful materials and most of them are MP3 files. For example, what I like most is audio books. These days I am listening to an audio book, Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. It originally takes a couple of weeks for me to read a book, however it takes less than two hours to listen to this audio book. Even when I am about to get a sleep, I can listen to it. How effective it is! Yesterday, I also downloaded the president-elect Obama’s address which he gave public after he won the race. It is very overwhelming because I can feel his progressive spirit with his words, “I can do it, and we can do it.”

Of course, somehow this web site is not good at college students to be teachers in that this web site is not trying to show and provide some useful materials for mastering English, but just trying to show some skills so as to get a good grade at test. However, if you can take a lot of advantage from this web site, I am sure that you can improve your English a lot. How about you? Do you know any similar web site for your friends?

CNN Students News
By Sangeun Moon

By what tools can we learn English effectively? Having high level of English skill is vital to live in this society, so it is true that getting good tools to learn English is important. However, the expenses of purchasing tools for learning English like books, CDs and videos are sometimes burdensome. However, there is a tool with no costs and also with plenty of effects. It is the ‘Internet’. It helps us to develop various skills in English. We can improve our listening, speaking, reading and listening skills by the internet. One way to take advantage of the internet is to find a good website and use it. The website I'd like to introduce is CNN Students News (http://edition.cnn.com/studentnews). This website provides with the information and materials about the issues which affect young people's learning.

This website consists of seven parts - CNN Students News, In the spotlight, Quick guide & Transcripts, Ten questions & News quiz, Learning activities, One-Sheets, CNN classroom edition and Maps.

․ CNN Students News
CNN Students News is uploaded everyday except for weekends. So, we can watch five News articles in a week. In CNN Students News part, we can see video clips in about ten minutes. It includes three main issues, Shout out and Word to the wise. Shout out is a quiz to arouse interest in one of the main issues and Word to the wise is an explanation about a word for the next report. Since this news targets students, compared to common news, articles include more interesting and easier contents that viewers could understand and join this part more easily.

․ In the spotlight
In this part, you can watch stuffs in the spotlight recently.

․ Quick guide & Transcripts
Quick guide provides us with information about the things we have to focus on and Transcripts enables us to check what we couldn't understand while watching video clips.

․ Ten questions & News quiz
Ten Questions are about the video clips and we can answer what we learned from the video clips and in this part we can express our opinion. For example, if there is a video clips about texting while driving, and then there are some questions about it. One of the questions is 'In your opinion, should texting while driving be outlawed throughout the U.S.? Why or why not?' Therefore, in this section we could practice our writing skill. In addition to Ten Questions, News quiz is uploaded once in a week. It includes overall questions about that week's video clips and gives us good chances to review what you learned.

․ Learning activities
Learning activities are for teachers to teach students helpful contents in video clips in class. It provides teachers with guidelines and specific procedures. By using these activities, teachers can help students to understand the important contents deeply and clearly. For instance, if there is news about celebrating Veterans Day, teachers could use Learning activities like 'interviewing U.S. military veterans to teach about the sacrifices that these men and women have made in the defense of our country.'

․ One-sheets
This part is for getting a deep knowledge of important things in the news. For example, one of the One-sheets is on the subject of gas prices. It shows us what kinds of materials are related to the price of gasoline and how they affect the price of gasoline.

․ CNN classroom edition
CNN classroom edition enables us to record video clips. This part is especially for teachers to use in class, offering specific directions. It includes the information about the adequate grade levels to watch video clips, subject areas, objectives, curriculum connections, discussion questions and suggested activities.

․ Maps
In this part, you can see maps which are shown in the video clips.

<Tips to improve English skills by using this website>
It could be extremely profitable for you to join all the parts of this website, however, if you can’t, you don't need to use all of these parts to study English. Therefore, I'd like to suggest one method how to use of this website efficiently. Firstly, watch CNN Students News several times and check transcripts. Then, answer ten questions and in the weekend, answer news quiz as review. Next, to read one-sheets is beneficial to practice reading skill. Finally, you can also practice speaking, using learning activities and CNN classroom edition with your friends. By following this method, you can enhance all the parts of your English skills in balance.
