It has been said that, “Not everything that is learned is contained in books.” Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

I fully agree with the above quoted statement for various reasons.

Books can provide knowledge about almost all theoretical aspects including technological, biological and moral aspects. After a certain stage even students have to change the patterns of their studies. Their school or teacher introduces them with the practical aspects of each subject in order to make them learn nicely. Conducting practical things is not possible for all fields. Some subjects are abstract. They can be observed or realized but not touched or seen. Emotion between two people is one such thing. People learn these things from personal experience rather than the books. Parents can be in a relaxed state thinking that the books can give their children the moral values but it is not true because unless and until the children learn and experience these things in their lives they cannot learn it. According to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, “Man is a social animal”. He/She learns most of the things from the social order they grow in. A child learns many things in the company of the others. This is the reason how siblings affect each other. At the time of festive occasions the people from all sects in a society come together and celebrate the functions. Their children carry the same things to future when they grow old. These young children now well grown adults do not learn to celebrate the festivals from any of the book but from the society.

I personally feel that unless we face things we cannot learn them by books. I can give an instance of my own experience. A year ago, I wanted to learn swimming, so I asked a friend of mine for the same as she knew it. My friend had no spare time so she gave me a book which was a manual for learning the swimming. I read this book atleast seven times before I went for swimming. Still I remember this day which I can say was really my first experience with swimming. I gained confidence fifth or sixth time after the swimming. Thus I could not learn swimming by reading a book.

It can be said that we cannot learn everything from books. The things like origin of species, geology, history of mankind etc can be best described and learnt only from books and that is what books are meant for. If a person aims to become a chef in a well known restaurant, I think his best recipe will come by experience but not by reading the books.

Thus according to me certain things are meant to learn through books but there are many more aspects of life which a person needs to learn only from personal experience.
